## who likes a math challenge?

i need to work out the cost of diesel - in US dollars - of travelling 1617 miles (2602 kilometres). it costs £374.95.

US diesel is at 52 cents a litre, van does 0.22 miles a litre.

i suck at maths! help me please! thank you!

## £1.04 a litre in UK

probably should have put that, sorry. otherwise i'd have just converted. fuck me my maths is atrocious...

## $3822

but i think the info you gave is duff .22 of a mile per litre? surely not

## ^

maybe you mean 0.22 litres per mile?

## If it was .22 litres per mile then it would be a far more reasonable $184.98

## sorry I meant $382.2

## if you meant 2.2 miles per litre then $382.2 If you meant .22 litres per mile

then $184.98

## huzzah!

that looks more like it! amazing work, i am indebted to you, thanks!

## you would be best advised to ditch the van because it might be doubtful if you could make it between petrol stations

sorry gas stations before you need filling up.

so you should also factor in a large number of jerry cans to carry the fuel you will need to make it between stations

## There's something wrong with your numbers.

1617 miles divided by 0.22miles/litre gives a need for 7350 litres, which works out (7350 litres x 0.52 dollars) at $3822.

Are you sure that it only does .22 miles a litre?

## '...an average fuel consumption of 0.22 miles per litre'

is what it says on the site. but yeah, if it's quoting me £374.95, $3822 seems unlikely. i know i said my maths was a little off but not that off... what would it be if it was 0.22 litres per mile?

thanks!

## $184.98

but if it meant 2.2 miles per litre then it would be $382.2

## okay, $184.98 sounds fucking good to me

manager is nervy, so i've been told we're just going to budget for $400. brilliant - why we couldn't have just done that to begin with i don't know. Thanks for your help guys, your maths genius is equalled only by your generosity.

## Do we get to pocket the surplus at the end of the trip?

## hold your horses there. you mentioned £374 at teh beginning. Is this a figure you were told

as an approximation? Cos this is closer to my dollar figure of $382.2 (assuming 2.2 miles per litre) question someone about what they actually meant on the site that you got the consumption figuresd from. Because the pound is worth slightly more than the dollar so this is probablye the more likely figure.

Budgetting for $400 is cutting it a bit fine, because the figure that they will give for the consumption would only be approximate (even if they got it right) and will be for certain driving conditions which you may or may not replicate. I would have thought that the variance that you should allow for (from $382) should be larger than $18.

Budget for $450 seems far more sensible (although i wouldnt guarentee that even) (budget for $500 seems better)

If you are doing lots of nice long journeys on open roads rather than hopping around on short journeys or much city driving or in traffic then you should be OK

## the overall budget is much larger

so we can dip into that at anytime, if needs be. if i were driving we'd need to factor in the cost of many, many hours spent lost, alone and frightened but fortunately we has an american driver. rawhide/wagon roll (or whatever the East Coast equivalent is...)

## yee haw

## let me check.................

i'm hearing 'no'. if it was up to me, you'd be hearing 'yes', and the crisp rustle of superfluous bills. be more like the jingle-jangle of Uncle Sams coppers once everyone's bought novelty gangsta snaxxx.
