The concept is a bit lame, seems Gervais is playing his usual character, looks like it could be mildly amusing though. Probably mainly due to the great supporting cast:
it's his schtick...it's his typeface....he's a comedian, not a character actor...no one goes...'oh look...here's allen again playing the nerdy neurotic jew'....etc etc......he's found what fits and he has every right to run with it with whatever role.....
The UK trailer is better.
Quite dull really. This looks the same. Really pedestrian. You'd think in tyhe position he was in after Office/Extras he might have taken a risk and made a film in the UK.
''So The Invention Of Lying trailer is out on the internet around the world.
Hope you like it.
Well, I hope some of you like it anyway.
As I've said before, some will love the movie and some will hate it. Some will hate it so much that they will also hate the fact that some people love it. Most that love it won't care that some people hate it. Some that love it will also love the fact that some people hate it. I am one of those people, but I also love the fact that some people will love it. You get the point.
Dear critics (everyone), when judging the film, please remember that it is a high concept, PG 13 romantic comedy. It's not Shindler's List or The Godfather. If you compare it to serious works of genius it will not fair that well. If you compare it to many other lighthearted comedy movies it will do rather well. I know full well that some will hold it up to scrutiny like I think it is Citizen Kane. But I don't. One reviewer said that the Extras Christmas Special was sub-Dickens. Really? An episode of a sitcom wasn't as good as the greatest storyteller of the last 500 years maybe? Poor. Very poor.
I blame The Office.
So from now on let every comedy be judged against The Office.
That's fair. Or maybe we should just take things for what they are.
The Invention Of Lying is a fun adventure with some great comic actors saying some funny things. (In my opinion.) But who am I to judge? Well I'm the bloke that did The Office. And that's brilliant. Better than Dickens. And much better than that fucking awful Extras. ''
That's how I feel about Gervais, funnily enough.
he gets so much stick around here but gervais is still up with the greats for me.
I just dont see why he felt the need to make some banal high concept films in hollywood first.
@Bumbler - I think its still possible to make good comedies though rather than this high concept toss that he keeps churning out.
This is the first film he's written and directed.
co wrote and co directed the whatever of lying.
The first one is about a man who sees ghosts after a botched operation. the second about a man who invents lying in a world where lying doesnt exist.
and any script involvement was dialogue for his character, which was in many ways his comedy persona.
He read it and thought 'I'll do this'.
He has enough power to allow a rewrite on the script of his first film.
Like I said above with that sort of power its a shame he didnt just make a good film.
who is one of the most successful screenwriters in the US. He's also made a few moderately successful films. I don't think Gervais really felt the need to insist on a re-write.
Wasnt in the meetings about the script so not sure really but it definately feels like a rather pedestrian film with a bit of Gervais esque dialogue cheucked in.
Not really sure what we are debating tbh. All I said was I thought the high concept nature of his last two films is a bit lame. You asked what high concept toss i meant. I explained the content of his first two films.
but you said 'high concept toss he keeps churning out', indicating that he's made many high concept films. This is his first.
Hes made two films.
They are both high concept.
Granted the first one he just acts in, but he got it made, they even rewrote the charactor to accomodate him.
Thats two films he made so far, both have high concepts.
And his justification is 'well its not suppossed to be citizen cane.'
probably give it a watch
but I'm starting to warm to him now...on the other hand, Jonah Hill is starting to make my head hurt, speak up boy!
