Laura Robson is a break up against Hantuchova!?!!"!"!
er, come on Tim!
In other news, I just wangled tickets for Friday. RESULT.
she has broken again!
I'm on a corporate jolly, but we do need to get involved in some Pimms action. I drank so much of it at Queens last week that I was finding mint leaves in my teeth for days afterwards.
I just use whole mints plants instead of toothpaste.
Are you Centre Court? I'm excited. Should get to see Federer and his stupid gold bag.
I felt a bit of a fraud being at Queen's in a suit the other week, like I'd wangled into some exclusive club and didn't really deserve to be there. I imagine that feeling will be increased immeasurably on Friday. Still, fuck it. I'll get to see Federer live and direct. Result.
God I hate Gary Richardson.
Well, 'smart casual', which is suit sans tie, innit.
Unless I invest in some chinos before then. Which is increasingly likely.
I will. I used to love the endless interviews with McEnroe (best pundit on TV?). Not so much Ginny Wade.
I also watched the Cliff Richard thing not too long ago. Truly painful. That won't be missed.
You're more 'come on bunny!'.
the answer is 'very' or something similar.
as the commentator reminds us. Every point.
SUCH TENSION...oh, it was about a foot out.
Stupid blind tennis players.
robsons totally gonna win wimbledon right?
Nevermind. Taking a set of the world number 32 is a decent start to a grown-up career.
she's done pretty well from what I see - just a tendency to double fault a little too often, which is understandable considering.
welcome to being a brit at wimbledon pet.
Yet I persevere. I have a fifteen game accumulator and it comes in at less than 9/1...
to play against one of the numerous french tenniswomen who'll lose in the first round...
would be nice to have one thread to collect all our Wimbledon-related thoughts.
Blake and Lopez out already in the men's draw. Federer and Williamsbot Jr through fairly effortlessly.
just thought you should all know.
She seems dead nice.
Worked perfectly yesterday, can't seem to get it to work at all today... - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/8114268.stm
all doing well.
someone better go thru, cos Boggo is next.
Anne goes from 5-4 and serving for the set to losing 5 games in a row.
Georgie 5-4 and a break down, Zvonareva serving for the set.
It hurts the traditionalist in me.
Keothavong looks to be going out.
and has sorted out the physical side of things. He just makes me feel sad. I mean I am sure he has a pretty good life and stuff playing Challenger tournaments but it must be a bit depressing at times being a second-rate sportsperson.
there is just something wrong in his mentality.
Btw, check out pic three on this. How much does jankovic look like a blowfish?
and he said that Hamilton had told him that he'd much rather be a second-rate sportsperson than all the pressure of challenging for titles and stuff.
Some people like it. Allegedly.
I can see that in that Hamilton has done pretty well through his career and has probably earnt a good amount. Same as league footballers who earn well and still get to be professional sportsmen. But in the lower levels of tennis (as in snooker) there isn't much money around at all. I can definitely see the appeal of being a middling player though.
ALSO-RAN SNOOKER TOP TRUMPS.
that he is going out with a lapdancer. Who says there is no "characters" any more?
he's saved three break points and is now on set point...
come on Britain's number two!
You damned goof Goodall.
thank god, I bloody do not like her at all.
although now it will make the women's tournament even more unbearably shit than it always is, because at least she can sometimes compete against the Williams'
When compared with the men's draw, women's tennis is ridiculous. No wonder there were so many 'saviour of women's tennis!' articles about Sharapova over the weekend. All that for someone who's only played about twice since she got back.
What I really hate about it is that it's not just about lack of competitiveness etc. Women's tennis could actually offer something a bit different as opposed to the power of the men's, but in the women's there is also massively less finesse and variety. There's a tiny number of players who aren't purely baseline bashers so you end up with a rubbish sport where they still aren't even mindlessly bashing it as well as the men. Just a horrible sport to watch on the whole.
i hope Safina sorts her head out, though I realise the chance of her winning it are about 24034343/1.
Either way I'm backing Baltacha.
Roger Federer's not bad is he? Henman wasn't too bad either despite being a posh boy.
There's an outcry about all the crap British tennis players getting central contracts (worth about a 16k salary a year). That's for being the second best player in a major sport in the whole country.
after colliding with the umpire's chair.
serves him right for knocking Josh Goodall out yesterday.
the latter of whom looks to be struggling with a knee/lower leg injury. Murray's half of the draw, this.
Britain's Andy Murray (c) and Elena Baltacha in action later today. Do Britain proud guys - or if you both lose, humiliate Scotland.
Honestly. Let's stop with nicknames for tennis players. Actually, let's stop with nicknames for all sportspeople except cricketers.
Hewitt is now 2 sets to love up against Del Potro. Elena Baltacha has started well against Flipkens, and is 3-1 up in the first.
losing 5 games in a row from 5-5 and is 3-0 down in the second.
Hewitt beats JMDP in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5
it's nice to see him back on form, but he really needs to pick things up a bit, he was really sloppy at points.
he's obviously not back at his best yet and is slightly rough around the edges, but he never let Del Potro settle.
Wozniaki takes the first set against Kirilenko 6-0, and leads 1-0 in the second. Murray is on after this match.
3 games for Kirilenko to avoid the dreaded double bagel.
Hewitt was obviously capable of it though. If Murray can't get to the final, it will be a pretty poor showing, although Roddick could give him a test this year.
Hope he gets to play on CC as this is his last year
could be a toughie, though Murray is playing like a brick wall at the minute.
I’m actually glad that we were on No 1 Court rather than Centre Court (and thankfully the thunderstorms stayed away, so we got a full day’s play). The Tommy Haas v Mario Cilic match, despite being abandoned before it had finished (6-6 in the final set, at 9.30pm) was incredible. When the umpire called it off due to bad light, not a single person booed – the whole crowd was on its feet giving them a standing ovation.
Tommy Haas becomes the first man through to the QFs after beating Igor Andreev in straight sets. He plays either Sela or Djokovic next.
Venus Williams is through in the ladies tourney after Ivanovic retired injured. Looks like she should be joined by her sister who is currently murdering Hantuchova.
Federer is 2 sets to love up against Soderling in a repeat of the French Open final. Form temporary, class permanent.
Murray plays Wawrinka on centre later. Hopefully the Swiss won't be on a roll.
it does look as if a federer - murray final is on the cards, and it could be quite interesting.
The women's game is just completely pointless though.
Then I decided that I didn't care whether it made me sound sexist or not.
The games are by and large awful, nowhere near as entertaining as the men's games, and half the length. And those are all facts. COLD, HARD, SEXIST FACTS.
I can't remember ever seeing anything resembling a contest between venus and serena
I think the men's game is at a high at the moment, and the women's game is at a low. I fucking hated the big hitting era of men's tennis in the late 90s/early 00s though. If pay is only dependent on how good the game is at the moment, then this is an argument that will never be settled and will bore me shitless. Also, women's tennis fans will argue that if they get less funding, their game will never be able to compete with the men's.
I don't think a tennis match is (usually) any better for being 5 sets instead of 3. In the first week of Wimbledon there don't seem to have been many competitive matches in either tournament, or that many you'd sit through from start to finish.
I'd like to see the whole scoring system changed, or at least experimented with. At the moment I think it drags.
Soderling really pushed him in the last set, and Federer was nowhere near breaking RS's serve for most of the match. Inevitably, it was just silly little mistakes (like double faulting to give Fed match point) and not taking chances (he got neither of his two break points) that cost the Swede. Federer was a brick wall.
good match on here between him and verdasco.
I've never seen rain cheered at Wimbledon before.
All the commentators' talk of the roof on Saturday was driving me absolutely mental.
it's all getting a bit "C'mon Tim" now :'(
it's SUCH a good game though
I can't call this 5th set.
ever been played to this late a time?
I'm no tennis fan but I was absolutely glued. Fair play to the Swiss dude. I do hate Tennis fans though. Cricket lite.
reminded me how much I love watching tennis. So tactical and such a battle of nerve and will.
the crowd (especially those 4 orphan looking kids) between every single point was really grating.
so, so annoying. are we watching on french tv or something?!
and what was with idiot man interviewing him on the court afterwards as if he'd just won the title or something? murray looked pretty pissed off that they had the audacity to do that i think - he knew it was only the 4th fucking round.
also, he didnt really play that well. i saw one rally between federer and siderling and federer just looks, well, sort of better.
or similar. Why not just show replays of the point that was just won? In some cases they switched to the crowd before the ball had even bounced twice. And to make it worse they actually showed slow motion replays of certain people in the crowd, it nearly ruined it for me.
Agreed that it was completely pointless interviewing him afterwards, he was clearly knackered and it wasn't like it was the final
mumbling something about him dreaming about winning and it being time for bed. He's a professional sportsman ffs! Murray should've chinned him and walked off.
save a couple of nervy tie-breaks he just looks a class above. Murray is a great counter-hitter and returner, but this title is Federer's to lose.
its just federes touch and the way he holds himself as he hits it. he seems to have more "shots" than murray
I don’t know how, but he’s got a reputation within the BBC for being the best sports interviewer they have. Perhaps it originated from his Bill Clinton interview during a rain break about a decade ago, but I think that he’s a bit clueless, especially when dealing with any sports outside of his comfort zone. But then again, someone within the BBC Sport department thinks that Mihir Bose is worth his salary too, so what do I know?
And you’re right about Federer. Every time I see a match featuring him or Nadal, it just looks a gear or two faster than any Murray game. He’s beaten them both on occasions, but there’s definitely a significant gap in class still.
The big test for Murray will be whether he can recover after last night. I’m still to be convinced that he’s got the mental and physical endurance to play more than one extraordinarily battling match per Grand Slam (in which the matches are best-of-five and there are seven rounds).
He used to do the boxing, not that I watch boxing, but you could not find a duller more lifeless questioner of sportspeople.
i just dont understand why they sent on him onto the court to interview in front of the whole crowd in round 4
Admittedly, most of them have been conducted in the ‘tunnel’, but they broadcast them live on the big screens literally a minute after the match has finished.
Wawrinka's backhand was unbelievable at times, so powerful. Re those four teenage lads the cameraman kept on cutting to every time Murray won a point, was the one on the far left wearing a mock Jewish hat / wig combo? Or was he actually Jewish? We couldn't work it out.
I think it was just another version of the hilarious rasta hat with fake dreadlocks.
i didnt get it?
"lol I'm at the tennis! lol Jews!"
Lindsay Davenport has had a baby
come on you kraut!
Fed-Karlo into a tiebreak
whoever thought there'd be none is mental.
i dont mean many.
3-0. fed express.
Murraymint is struggling, I hope fedex puts him in his place.
he's serve & volleying and everything.
haas got the power
when a 2nd service call (out) is challenged and they win the challenge, why does the player get a 1st service?
Not even a hint of a smile from the German.
cos he will no doubt get owned next round. He deserves to be in the final, and I expect would if he were drawn against Murray.
