Summer Blonde by Adrian Tomine (Graphic Novel Centric)
I think too many indie comic writers rely on Daniel Clowes surrealism too much nowadays... enjoyed none the least.

I won't pressure you into anything, we can take it slow. Just start with a few highlights, see how it makes you feel.
I've read the first two parts;
there wasn't any surrealism so far. Obvious similarities to Daniel Clowes though.
It took me a while to get in Tomine's short stories in 'Sleepwalk' but I really like the longer stuff in this. It's all a little oddly depressing but great if you're in that kind of torpor.
Agreed.
Although the one about the guy and the cake in Sleepwalk is good.
I don't like to even think about that one.
eh? there isn't any surealism in summer blonde
tomine gets accused of ripping off clowes alot but they are friends and I think the influence goes both ways, later clowes is more tomine like than tomine is clowes like in my opinion. Tomine is frustrating in his unprolificness.
^this
and this has also reminded me that I still don't own Shortcomings.
I'm looking forward to reading 'Shortcomings'.
All the stuff in 'Sleepwalk' and 'Summer Blonde' is too short for my liking.
