but I can't help but feel that it's much more likely to be utter dogshit, especially considering the director has so far only done TV ads and music videos.
I'm not a big believer in remakes/reboots/sequels/prequels ruining an original because, you know, they don't. That original is still there and is still brilliant. But I do find it a little sad that they're fiddling with the Alien 'universe', as it were. The original film (although I prefer Aliens) was really something special. It took a surrealist artist and the fear of male rape and did something entertaining, thought-provoking and terrifying with it. This will probably just be explosions, boobies and people dying in a whole manner of Saw-meets-Alien ways.
I can't comment because I've not seen them, it was just something noted in a piece I read the other day. It also mentioned (I think!) that Ridley Scott was a commercials director, better known for selling Hovis, so I guess there's still hope...
But yeah, I think there's a real fear of it turning into some Alien-torturers plus BAYSPLOSIONS effort :(
I'm with you on remakes/sequels -- I'm happy for anybody to try as many times as they like to make an exceptional film. Who cares if that exceptional film is an "original" or a sequel?
It's bad enough that those AVP films have tainted both universes, but why the hell do we need all this 'prequel' bullshit?
