Dear lord. Stick to the contentious film reviews please.
No idea about the rest, I've only looked at the top 10 so far
is 58. LIST FAIL.
oh dear me.
Leaving aside the utter futility of ranking games like ancient arcade titles and ultra-modern shooters next to each other in any meaningful way, some of this is just plain wrong. Halo - the highlight is the Flood. Wut? The Flood? Really? Nah.
that's an amazing quote. Although I guess it is memorable for being the exact point that the game went a bit off the rails..
about Civilization at least
It should've been number one tho. An absolute masterpiece. Art in its heighest form. Poetry. Brilliant, absoluetly feckin brilliant. Metal Gear Solid should have been in the top 10, probably in place of Zelda
Zelda OOT should be number 1!
Also it's frankly ludicrous that GTA IV is only 6 places below GoldenEye.
Good as it is.
And yeah whoever said Ocarina of Time should have been No. 1, good call. Super Mario World is fantastic too though
and VII is by far the best FF game, come off it
I prefer VIII (the Marmite game) and IX
i've played all of them since (except 11) but i can see why people can dislike it, random battles and turn based fighting being the biggies. Mario World is a good choice for number 1
It's nowhere to be seen. For some reason, I checked...
If you put both games side by side today, of course IV is superior. Not just graphically but in terms of storyline and immersion too.
MY ROSE TINTED SPECS OF OBJECTIVE TRUTH!
Wah wah wah wah wah.
It always ends up as a competition to see who can name the most 'retro', lo-spec piece of shit and describe it as something like 'awesome' or 'amazing'. Either that or some horrible Nintendo wankfest where people end up talking about how awesome the Zelda soundtrack is.
Lists like this usually end up with a severe case of goldfish syndrome, and you get games released last month winding up in the top 10 etc
Game lists are no dumber than any other type really. Though they're more prone to idiot console fanboys bitching.
I find it amazing how people don't grow out of non-football-related computer games by 16 at the most; especially when they maintain enough interest to be bothered to debate which is the best ever.
I'm 52 and still enjoy the games
And oh look it's a "video games are for kids" opinion, not seen one of those before.
it's supposed to be true.
Do you, really?
it's not a bad selection all in all.
My only problem was that there were a few too many sequels. Some games are then judged on their impact at the time, whilst others are judged on their quality. RE 1 was amazing at the time, but not a patch on the later versions.
Super Mario World is the best game ever. Clearly
so that I don't have to spend hours wading through the pages one by one?
I have far too many other websites to be reading.
websites that do this sort of shit = fail.

but I've played it recently in single player and multi player, and it's aged really badly...
As long as it includes at least one version of the following games I'll be happy.
-Either Sonic 2, 3 or Sonic and Knuckles
-An old CM game - preferably 01-02 :)
-COD 4 (either version)
-Ratchet and Clank - preferably the 2nd one
-One of the original Pokemon game boy games
-Star Wars: Jedi Knights (1 or 2)
-Timesplitters Future Perfect
Is the list filled with retro games from the 80s/early 90s?
GTA: Vice City and Halo 2.
The levels on the first one were awesome.
(I'd also really like to see a new version of x-wing or tie fighter)
I really enjoyed the story behind them and I found both games very immersive. It was weird because I didn't expect to enjoy them quite as much, they were my brothers games and out of boredom and a little curiosity I started playing the first one. The only other Star Wars game I enjoyed is that Battlefront 2 one, I think that's what it was called.
To redress the balance, here's my list of the top 10 original game boy games:
2. The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening
3. Super Mario Land
4. Castelvania II: Belmonts Revenge
5. Mario Golf
6. Kirby's Pinball Land
7. Super Hunchback
8. Motocross Maniacs
9. Dr Franken
Halo is at least as good as Halflife 2; not as innovative but just as much fun.
A soul enriching game that had me weeping like a school girl with joy all the way through. Yorda!
but Mario World is up there in my favourite games. A Link To The Past should have been higher than 27.
When I saw Portal was 48th and World of fucking Warcraft was 3rd... 3rd?!
Worst list ever.
One place ahead of Fifa.
which is fair.
then FUCK you Empire, you movie watching FUCKS.
as it should be.
i actually found an old copy of Computer and Video Games magazine in my attic yesterday and it had articles on the arcade releases of SFIII (talking about new characters like Necro and stuff) and Tekken 3. Oh, the memories.
FUCK, THAT WAS MORE THAN TEN YEARS AGO.
oh my stars! Man I remember getting Tekken 3 then watching the intro sequence where it's just the characters shadow boxing their moves and shit, thinking it looked absolutely incredible and my dad saying "in a few years time, even the in game graphics will be that good". Good lord!
oh yeah... *does that really fucking annoying move where Blanka keeps electrocuting the shit out of ya*
*gets fed up with Blanka in general and throws the controller at the screen* TIGER DESTRUCTION
I still have all my copies of HIGH FIVE-era C&VG... Ed Lomas, the bog-roll quality yellow pull-out paper that was Freeplay, amazing import arcade info, guides aaaaaaaaaaaahhhh
me too! i was wondering what became of Ed Lomas a while back. i googled him- nothing. they used to always bang on about how much he liked Pink Floyd. FREEPLAY! drawinz wot you dun with that dog thing, readers ideas for videogames (which were all awesome) BRILLIANT. man, i'm feeling nostalgiac.
All I can throw up is:
And finally, this interview with Rich Leadbetter, who worked for EMAP around the C&VG/Mean Machines era, and mentioned a lot of the staff here:
if you're paying, then we're having dinner chief
i trhew out all my old 1997 - 2000 era C&VGs. i love the Melting pot bit where they took the piss out of kids ideas for games. the got me so hot under the collar for a dreamcast i bought one based on their review of sonic adventure
LIVE A LIFE?! WITH CYCLES OF DAY AND NIGHT?! A WHOLE TOWN TO EXPLORE?! WORK TO EARN MONEY?!
Obviously, these things are commonplace in games now, but back then... holy shit!
I miss C&VG... genuine enthusiasm for games of all types, from all places, combined with geeky surreal humour and personality, with a knowing appreciation that games should be fun, first and foremost. I remember writing an English mock exam on how the content and style of C&VG had inspired my enthusiasm for writing
I saw my friend play this last year. Basically, if you don't do what you're supposed to do straight away (i.e. know what happens at every part), you end up dying. Very very quickly. Basically you learn what to do by dying over and over again, each time a little bit further on.
from this description alone I know you're talking about Another World.
while some of the ordering is debatable, and the use of sequel vs series ranking is inconsistent, it does include pretty much all of the greats
#1 is wrong though. Also they haven't included any of the Pokemon series, Digimon on the PS1, or any of the Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest series.
I only checked fifty or so of their top 100, and didn't see it.
I don't recall seeing the other fallouts either which were also good
there're definitely a couple of 2009 games in there, too
the hammer, the baseball bat or the tire-iron?
(Nice to see Doom in the top 10 though.)
It's pretty good I'd say. It's subjective so obviously some things are going to be missed out, but it seems fairly well thought out.
but if its as good as alex ferguson player manager 2001, then this should be the greatest game of all time.
Battled my way into serie a with salernitana.
Halo is above Half Life AND Half Life 2. FUCK
Had to get that off my chest,
Surprises/ highlights/ upsetting things:
Bomberman only 94?
Lemmings only 87?
SimCity should be ranked there instead of SimCity2000
Donkey Kong Country made the top 100, surprising, but it has a place in my heart
We don't need multiple Final Fantasy entries people
Super Metroid should be higher than 68 blatently
wtf is Devil May Cry doing there?
...and LittleBigPlanet for that matter
Pleased to see Oblivion there (may start playing that again soon, has much more longevity than Fallout 3)
Portal should be far FAR higher than 48
Sensible Soccer above PES and FIFA, controversial
I'm surprised Tomb Raider is as high as 38, always seemed as a "style over substance" type game
The Sims above SimCity, fuck off
This list makes me wish I'd played Shadow of the Colossus
Half Life only 29, you're having a laugh there Empire
Tetris = mint
Bioshock is awesome, but I don't think its 26th best
Resident Evil 1, 2 and 4 don't deserve all to be there
Gears of War is not top 20
Mario Kart only 17???? Losing the will to read on.
Goldeneye only 10? come on
I will however accept Super Mario World as number 1.
I realise that this may have turned a bit ranty,
Maybe, cause, y'know it's an awesome game....
"We don't need multiple Final Fantasy entries people"
Nuh-uh, really really need them - though for sure it should have been XII and X instead of VIII - I don't get that at all, even if the list is biased towards older games, they're both clearly better than VIII (though I'd have no issue with the 4 of them getting on there). And it's okay for multiple Zelda / Mario games but not FF? That strikes me as a little strange seeing as different FF games are more varied than those types...
And the FF dig was as 7 and 8 are not that different (compared to some of the SNES FF games for instance) whereas Super Mario is very different to Mario 64.
but then that could apply to a whole lot of games on that list, the battle system might not be the most revolutionary, but then that applies to half the games on the list at least. The point is that it's just really, really cool. Might be you can mash buttons and get through it, but DMC & DMC3 are probably the most downright enjoyable games I've ever played. I can't think of any other game where it's so much fun to kill.
Or failing that, evasive for the BBC Micro.
Or a quick summary would do.
92. Wipeout 2097 (1996 Playstation)
90. Daytona USA (1994 Arcade)
45. Gran Turismo (1998 Playstation)
17. Super Mario Kart (1993 SNES)
No Pole Position?
No Spy Hunter?
No Hard Drivin'?
No Super Hang-On?
No Road Rash?
No Micro Machines?
No Virtua Racing?
No Ridge Racer?
No Sega Rally?
No 1080 Snowboarding?
No Project Gotham?
And yet there's room for what seems like every other game to be one where a bloke walks around with a gun. I like a good shoot out, but jeez...
As for the lack of shmups...
Basically, what I'm trying to say is "FUCK you Empire, you movie watching FUCKS", a la Mehodor.
No Space Invaders?
No Riddle of the Sphinx?
(Ok, I'm joking about those last couple.)
Is better than all of that stuff you listed...
That still leaves the 8 spaces after it for filling with racing goodness.
No Soul Calibur?
No Mortal Kombat?
its gonna take my knackered laptop an age to get through this. :(

I can't take this seriously now...
At the time there were huge debates about which was better out of Perfect Dark and Golden Eye, so to see GE get 10 but PD nowhere on the list is a bit perplexing.
Was glad to see Double Dragon just make it in. Had expected that it wouldn't.
Two games I would've liked to have seen on the list, but which I am not surprised did not: Pikmin, and Space Station: Silicon Valley. Thought that Pikmin might've had a slim chance... I've only met a handful of people that have played SSSV, but every single one of them has agreed that it is a classic.
Apparently, Space Station: Silicon Valley is one of Jimmy Chamberlain's favourite games...
zelda is my favourate.
Doom is there
civ is there
SF2 is there
MW is there
However I notice that the original pathfinder game isnt in the top 10
Space invaders (surely the introduction of hardcore fanatical gaming to the masses)
(maybe also pacman)
1. Super mario world (good pick)
3. Deus Ex
The more I think about deus ex, the more I want to play it again. Fucking hell it's an incredible game
oh yes, so glad it made the list. Also good to see alone in the dark feature. shame Roger Wilco didn't get a lookin!
