re: people who speak in foreign accents when they're not from that country

whiterussian [Edit] [Delete] 24 replies 01:38, 3 May '09

or however that thread title went. (i speak in a british accent even though i'm not british, does that make me a cunt?)

i was talking to my housemate about the film amelie and he asked me how i'd pronounce the name, i guess i'd mentioned it before or something, because he pronounced it as you would emily, only with an a in the place of the e obvs. when i pointed out that that's not how that particular name is pronounced, he said that i don't understand english accents. how is that relevant, when it's not even an english name?????? wtf.

  • You mean a diacritic/accent?

Unless this is a heavy metal version of Amélie.

    • Öh DïsïntëgrätëdMïnd!

^ umlauts (except technically some of them aren't umlauts, because you can only have an umlaut over an 'a', 'o' or 'u')

      • Yes.

That was supposed to be a space after "diacritic" instead of a virgule. Oops. But yeah, apostrophes and commas are sometimes called diacritics too.

        • tell you to do what exactly?

          • To make some attempt at the accent, I think he means

Like talking in English in a French accent if you're in France is silly, but talking in French in a lovely-jubbly cockney accent is even sillier.

            • but it's not really a matter of 'talking' in an accent though

              it's just pronouncing words correctly

ironically, just after we'd discussed this issue, he proceeded to talk about ricky gervais, and i was tempted to point out that according to his own logic he shouldn't be pronouncing it like that but it would have brought on a shit storm so i didn't

              • Nah, it's not

                You're wrong.

                • god, i hate british people so much sometimes

                  • It's true though

There's a greater subtlety to an accent than it simply determining whether a word is pronounced correctly or not.

                    • all i'm saying is, you can't really argue that i'm not pronouncing it correctly

when i don't go by english rules of pronunciation, when it's not an english word i'm pronouncing

                      whiterussian @Zapsta | 3 May '09, 02:23 | X
                      • Yeah I can

English rules of pronunciation trump all others.

                      • what language are you speaking?

                        • so say that i'm speaking about you in a different language,

you'd be fine with me completely mispronouncing your name because that language works differently?

like, i can accept what they were talking about in the other thread like names of food and stuff. because foods tends to be called different things in different languages anyway. but a person's name is the same no matter what language they're speaking in/being spoken about in

that said, i do alter my name slightly because people wouldn't get it right anyway. but it's something this simple i don't see the point of insisting on mispronouncing it

                          whiterussian @alcxxk | 3 May '09, 14:52 | X
                          • names are different

because there's an absolute authority - the owner of the name. if i want to start pronouncing "christopher" as "rest stop", that's my call. i'd look a twat, but it's my call.

                            alcxxk @whiterussian | 3 May '09, 15:07 | X
                            • yeah, and i was talking about a name

so i'm not sure what you're getting at?

                              whiterussian @alcxxk | 3 May '09, 15:11 | X
        • i prayed to boodah to allah and jim

i turned to jesus and stayed there with him
