Those comments underneath are embarrassing - every time there's a HINT of having to use the correct Maori place name for something, the same plonkers pipe up and whinney on about how 'they've been fine for such and such amount of time so why change?'.
If you want an example of how petty this gets, there has been a debate back in my old home town in NZ about whether to add an 'h' into the name of the town, to make it the correct, traditional Maori spelling. It was transcribed wrong about 200 years ago and stuck. The suggestion that the 'h' be put back in has been greeted with SHEER OUTRAGE!11111111
