The lines down the sides are meant to be there. When you make it cover the whole screen, you're not taking advantage of your big fancy television, YOU'RE JUST STRETCHING OUT THE IMAGE. It makes people appear squat and distorts everything.

Please, for the love of god, save your widescreen mode for programs that are shot in 16:9. Thanks in advance.
