A little while ago I was round my parents. A TV show was on featuring the trials and tribulations of a Japanese man struggling through abject poverty. The show was sprinkled with excerpts of Japanese pop music for flavour.

My mum said: "I didn't know Japanese people sang".

I said: "...whut?"

She replied: "Japanese, Chinese, all those people - I didn't think they sang or did music."

Me: "But... everyone sings."

Her: "Okay."

I left it there.

This is barely half an hour after a conversation around the dinner table in which I mentioned going to see a Japanese band play at one point last year. She also owns both a Nintendo Wii and a Nintendo DS - both of which have games, made by the Japanese featuring Japanese music. And I'm fairly sure she's done Karaoke before, albeit singing western songs.
