Not sure about the concept of playing jokes that day.
I think "April Fool's Day" dates back to how the Christians used to mock Pagans for still calling April 1st New Year's Day after the introduction of Christian Calendar's with the year beginning in January. Hence referring to them as "April Fools".
I did learn this from an episode of the Simpsons though so it might not be wholly accurate.

i take the simpsons explanation to be 100% accurate.
i don't think anyone i know over here bothered last year and they certainly haven't this year
is that the americans do it too
it has some possibilities, even if it's all bollocks pffft.
also, some of the examples are amazing. left handed whopper, anyone ?
or changing Pi to the 'biblical value of 3'
although they call it "Poisson d'Avril". The main joke is sticking a fish on someone's back (WEAK) although they do also do more elaborate April Fools-y jokes too.
That's the only other country I know of that does it though.
