After I read it, I felt both amused and a lot less lonely. Horray for the DiS "massive"!
DISagreee with whatever the poster of the thread says in every thread
"Stupid people will, one day, inherit the Earth. It’s happening, all around us; every day we read stories about certain institutions being dumbed down. As music moves on its merry way through history, we see devolution in effect: from Chopin to The Ting Tings, this is not progression, friends. We are witnessing that which stokes the fires in our bellies gradually turning to shit."
and i find that really offensive. i don't like the fratellis personally, but making generalisations like that about their fans is incredibly arrogant. i remember mike diver gave me grief before on the boards for not respecting other people's taste, and then you see this from one of his fellow writers...it seems to me that music writers and posters around here use the whole 'music is subjective' argument when it suits them, but then 5 minutes later will dismiss a whole cross-section of the population as idiots cos they like the ting tings..hypocrisy is the word i'm looking for, i think
Who says he agreed with the review?
but the whole undercurrent of this website is 'we have great taste, people who like the fratellis and the ting tings are morons ' so for people to trot out the 'music is subjective' thing it irritates me
if i could be bothered looking . don't be a pedant, you know what i'm getting at. elitism and arrogance are rife on this website, but when it suits some one they'll play the 'music is subjective' card
I mean, it all depends if you really want a fair and balanced assessment of a record, or whether you want someone to tell you what they actually think.
But you are forgetting one thing. Fratellis fans ARE idiots.
Seriously, why? Stop being a snob.
It's music criticism, there will be snobbery. Some of the best music journalism is incredibly biased and single-minded. It's not such a bad thing.
snobbish, begrudging and to be honest most pathetic things I've read.
whats the point of even reviewing it anyway if you're going to give it the most predictable review in history
just incredibly snobbish and quite insulting to anybody that likes them, it really annoys me that people are so judging when it comes to music taste.
the last sentence in particular is just gratuitous. you can make an argument about the fratellis being a regressive step without being blatantly offensive.
the underlying subtext throughout is basically "i'm so smart, so much cleverer than the plebs!". get fucked, its almost certainly a terrible album, but i can't be bothered with some dorky, indier-than-thou loser, potato headed fucker waxing lyrical about their inferiority complex.
But this one's a bit lazy, too easy, very sloppy thinking. "People are stupid": fuck's sake! How old is this guy? You just know the guy who wrote this piece is a bit of an "opiniated" tosser, whose taste in music is corny as fuck and whose opinions are about as boring as the Fratellis music. I'd genuinely rather talk to someone who liked the Fratellis than this guy, who can do doubt talk total unoriginal shite for hours about, at a guess, Animal Collective or Neutral Milk Hotel.
you and lazerlife are both very right here.
Clicked on his name and saw his list of favourite music. AC & NMH in there:
"Prince, AC/DC, Arcade Fire, Animal Collective, Nirvana, These New Puritans, British Sea Power, Neutral Milk Hotel, Neil Young, NWA, Amy Winehouse, dEUS, Radiohead, Arab Strap... some of my favourites, but I'd hate to specify any genres of preference."
I like how it's pretty much a list of standard indie favourites, then in the middle there's NWA - a typical crappy music hack move. Then he'd thought, "Better have one more black person...hmm, I know - Prince!" and he's put him first so you get the message that he's been exploring a whole world of sound.
Like "I'd hate to specify any genres of preference" too. Listen, mate, don't be coy, your specific genre of preference is INDIE you corny fuck.
PLUS I bet The Fratellis are mega-gutted(!)
I don't even know why it was reviewed in all honesty. It's all well and good slating music because it's shit, music writters should be allowed to do this, of course they should. I don't however think the comments about the bands fanbase were necessary, and it reflected badly on Diver. It's a shame because he's a really talented writer, some of the reviews he did on here were a pleasure to read.
I assumed it was based on other comments in this thread, whoopsy. I'm glad it's not Diver, I really respect his reviews.
...but you think music writers should be allowed to slate stuff because its shit?
of bemoaning the fall of music from Chopin to the Ting Tings. His snobbish, futile drivel is the literary equivalent of the Fratellis: dull, obvious and appealing to the small-minded.
Most people who write clearly have some kind of talent, I don't understand why they refuse to turn it to something more worthwhile. Music journalism needs to stop existing. It's a pointless venture.
Except I understand why some people want to write about music, it's just the desire seems so tenuous.
the writer is clearly a cunt, and so is everyone who liked this review. thanks.
