Football on a Friday. Football on a Friday
Last night, with 8 minutes to go I switched Aalborg v Manchester City off as Shaun Wright-Phillips got booked because it was meandering towards a 0-0 draw and routine win for City. Imagine my surprise this morning when I find out that it took penalties for them to progress into the last 8! The dream lives on. Just.
Instead of watching that, I was captivated by Kettering v Oxford United. Oxford kept up their excellent run with a 2-1 win in a game that was enthralling. Kettering went down to 10 men just before half time after Craig Westcarr was sent off for raising his hands to the Oxford skipper. By the letter of the law the red card was the right decision but it seems such a soft thing to get dismissed for. At half time Mark Cooper, the Kettering boss, was telling his troops to ‘go down’ when they were near the opposition box. Hehe. Good work. Anyway, Oxford had gone in 2-0 up at the break after 2 goals in the first 8 minutes or so. Kettering were immense 2nd half though and gave everything. Jean-Paul Marna scuffing one in from 20 yards with 14 minutes remaining and Oxford’s Kevin Sandwith was dismissed for a funny 2nd booking. In stoppage time Kettering keeper Lee Harper blazed high, wide and handsome from a volley inside the Oxford box as the Poppies just fell short. Great stuff!
Champions League Quarter and Semi Final draws today.
Phil Brown has been fined by the FA for his part in the dust up with Joke In ‘Ere during the Newcastle v Hull match.
Cheltenham Borough Council are set to loan Cheltenham Town £100,000 to help ease their financial problems.
Chester City are on the verge of being taken over.
The Tonbridge Angels vice-chairman admits that the club is being bankrolled by himself and Martin Elliott the chairman after sponsors look likely to withdraw their backing and a drop in crowds this season. Their 25% price increase probably hasn’t helped with the latter. Anyway they then celebrate this news by going out and spunking heaven knows how much per week on Havant & Waterlooville’s Paul Booth.
What games are you going to this weekend?
