i just wish you'd change
the "top" threads that appear back to the last posted ones as opposed to the most popular ones :(
Might well happen
Tricky though.
why?
you get the most recent posts if you goto the board itself? the /community page is meant for people who want to catch up on the boards or dip into them occasionally.
Cant you just have it so the users can choose in the preferences?
I know it's NEVER as easy as that but I want latest where as casual disers may want most popular
The tabbed community is kick-ass
the font looks too big in the threads.
and they look a bit squashed.
i think i'm beginning to hate the font on DiS.
otherwise, fucking rad designs.
i bloody love the font
depends which browser you haz
it's the same font, just sized and bolded differently. (I might be wrong)
i think it looks good :)
i do agree with fitzcarraldo about the top threads on the community page being the most recent ones, not the most popular. but clearly it's a minor thing. actual site and the functions are cool.
can we have autocorrect that anyone who types "yr" it changes it to "your"
thx
can we have one of those "ignore" functions from other forums so we can ignore brusma please

I'm going to reply to all of your post
hush wee man
It's certainly looking better than the p4k redesign
like it....
didn't use my idea for next thread buttons, but I'll let that go, and continue to send dead pigeons to you in the post until my demands are met.
^underrated
i haz a feeling
that this button would cause some issues, so it'd make sense to add it when we know for sure everything's stable. don't worry, we're gonna keep adding alsorts of new functions.
I like the front page alot better
it looks alot more like a website as apose to a really expensive blog nice one.
the font being a little bigger in threads makes it look a bit special needs mind, but I think I'd get use to it and to be honest I'm kinda special needs anyway...
Yeah it is a little too big
You have to move your eyes more. Effort, man.
i've mostly complained in the past
but the new site really is looking ace. seriously, well done.
I only ever use the boards
I prefer the simplistic table you're using for the main Social, Music, etc front pages already, mainly because the Thread subject, Posted by, the number of replies and the Last poster are all the same size font and in a unobtrusive line... it's easy to scan and find the threads you want.
In the new design, the post starter and the last post usernames are much too small, as are the dates and times. Again, it doesn't scan well. The font looks a bit over baring on the eyes too.
I'd suggest a revamp of the current board layout rather than this new format, at the end of the day the rest of the site looks pretty enough but the boards need to be easy on the eye and simple! Think just how many hours a day/week/year you have eyes fixed on these pages...
So far this is the only thing bugging me, the rest of the site looks alright (bit too fussy and in yer face for me, but that's WEB 2.0 4 U)
yeah
we're still trying to get the fonts to look good for everyone, as they look lovely on a mac and ok in firefox on a pc with a certain resolution but not as nice on other computers. still to be tweaked and retweaked.
It's mainly nice
but a little more whitespace wouldn't go amiss on the front page. The information seems a bit too dense.
I think there needs to be at least a small gap above the word 'recent' in the left column.
Artist links in the reviews and features seem a very tiny bit too brightly coloured.
I find the font on the board pages a little over-bold but I'm sure others will disagree.
I'm not a designer so this is all just gut feeling.
very sexy
well done tom___
Yeah it's alrite
the news and shit below is a bit hard to decipher in such a small space. maybe a different colour background for each section?
Actually fuck that, whatever, it's fine.
bloody horrible
;)
Feedback (I'm using Firefox 3.0.7 on a Vista machine, with a widescreen monitor):
- Overall I like it, a lot. Good work.
- I don't think that the right hand column works that well. It's too inconsistent across the different sections. If you're going to include a quick reference column, it has to be a constant across the whole site. At the moment things move around and there's not really any logic as to what appears in this area. The changing positions of the adverts, in particular, is a real, real bugbear of mine.
- It would be nice to have a site footer like you've got at the moment containing the T&Cs, staff contacts etc.
Front Page---
- Is there any reason why the 'recommended' albums tab doesn't work properly? If it's a placeholder, ignore this.
- In the 'News' column, some of the text is tucking under the images.
- I'm not sure that I like the fact that the Album reviews are treated differently to 'In Depth', 'News' and 'Live Reviews'. It makes the formatting a little jumpy, and it sets up a strange hierarchy. The treatment of 'DiScover' is a little at odds with the way that the rest of the new content is handled.
- Are the 'In Photos' articles meant to be 'News'?
Section pages---
Great, apart from the gripe about the right hand column (see above)
Articles---
the introduction of the new column to the inside right is very confusing. Sometimes it has Relevant articles at the top, sometimes it has other articles in the series (eg on the DiScover pages). It just doean't really sit within the rest of the site, plus the jump to full width below it is a formatting no-no.
Gig listings---
Where's this information coming from? Is it LastFM? As a promoter, it's be nice to know. Also, I'd like it if today's best gigs were on the front page somewhere.
Forums---
- Awesome, seriously. The tabs are great. The My Posts, amazing, and the boards themselves, so, so, much better.
- If I'm going to be picky, I'd like the first post in a thread to be 'boxed in' rather than floating around.
Um, think that's it!
thanks for this thorough feedback, a few bits

S: The idea behind them changing slightly for the frontpage, articles and community is that some pages would have information doubling up (i.e. recent and the CD quilt aren't needed on the frontpage) and some pages get a lot more google traffic (artist profiles, archive articles, etc) so they need to act a touch more like a frontpage. Plus some pages are consistently much longer, like board threads. Although I agree, it was hard to come up with something which would work site wide.
- It would be nice to have a site footer like you've got at the moment containing the T&Cs, staff contacts etc.
S: Yeah, this was one of the last bits to add. Apparently the last version was a little crappy on IE6.
Front Page---
- Is there any reason why the 'recommended' albums tab doesn't work properly? If it's a placeholder, ignore this.
S: Yeah, tis just a placeholder to speed up things whilst it was being designed.
- In the 'News' column, some of the text is tucking under the images.
S: Yeah, still to be finished.

It makes the formatting a little jumpy, and it sets up a strange hierarchy. The treatment of 'DiScover' is a little at odds with the way that the rest of the new content is handled.
S: We need to go live before we can manage all of this a little better. At present lots of article types fall into the same sections, however, we do do a lot more record reviews and they're more read than anything else on the site.
- Are the 'In Photos' articles meant to be 'News'?
S: We're still developing galleries. At present we don't have enough article types. They'll have their own big pretty picture section before too long!
Gig listings---
Where's this information coming from? Is it LastFM? As a promoter, it's be nice to know. Also, I'd like it if today's best gigs were on the front page somewhere.
S: We're still to finish building the listings. We'll be taking a feed from Last.fm really soon but at present it's from various ticketing companies like Ticketmaster, Gigantic, etc. We're really keen to present listings really well and in a relevant manner, so this is something which'll take a full week to perfect the display and integration.
This overhaul is a huge ongoing project, which probably needs about 10 staff to do to the level a lot of people would expect, so I'm glad everyone is really positive and excited about what tom and I have done between us. These developments are ongoing but we needed to rebuild the back-end and now this rebuild of the bulk of the front-end allows us to start to integrate some new functionality, as well as better showcase a lot of the existing elements of the site which have been tacked on over the past nine years.
Sean
bump
any last requests?
yes please

haha
looks nice in firefox
front page is a lot better.
please tell me it's been tested in IE6?
yeah
we've spent weeks reworking things just for IE6. we were nearly ready to go on monday but for silly browser 'quirks' meaning we had to nudge things by 2 pixels to make them fix and all that stuff. the fonts don't currently look as nice in IE6, so we're still trying to fiddle that to make it as best for the most amount of people.
is it meant to be the case that you can't reply
I've got no constructive criticism
but just wanted to say it lokos bloody ace!! I'm glad you've its worked out now.
Yep
Until it goes live...
Amazing.
Okay Tom there is something..
http://test.drownedinsound.com/profile/collection
still looks pretty rubbish IMO.. if it looked less like this
http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/80/dis1a.png
and more like the quilt in the record reviews
http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/5372/dis2z.png
more information on the page and less white space? just a late suggestion..
much better.
Just noticed the drowning man at the bottom
ACE.
Stitch me up Soldier
looking delicious
Well done! I particularly like the tabbing along the top, bit like something I wanted to do on the Motel once but didn't have the know-how.
I'm using the latest release of Firefox and the footer with the drowning man is lovely, but it feels a bit big and too much like blank/redundant space to these eyes. Perhaps it could be shrunk a little (unless this is intentional)? x
