in order to prevent knife crime:
Will this go ahead? If so, do you think it'll have any effect whatsoever?
Chronic obsessions with violent video games are symptomatic of problems. They're the effect, rather than the cause. Most serious pyschologists agree on this point.
and politicians love a good useful aunt sally
desperate to try and rally public support, go for. the tories did it when they knew the tide was turning, ditto labour now. politicians, eh?
i don't agree with most psychologists on this though, In my opinion, even though they not "real" and don't condone violence , Since you didn't ask, I'll give my opinion on this. Feel free to disagree.
Video games set up habits, the same way that something like a flight simulator Or even martial arts training does, The closer the training is to reality, the more likely the training is to be effective.
Repeating something over and over again sets up a conditioned response . In the right circumstances the trained response can be triggered. A triggering event doesn't have to be an exact copy of the circumstances in the game. Something parallel will likely work.
According to Robert Cialdini, ( a great sociologist who wrote the book "influence") the law of social proof states that in a situation where an individual does not know what to do, he will look at the response of the nearest individual who he/she perceives as being like him/herself and copy their actions, if you extend the definition of nearest individual to include computer game avatars or characters from television programs. A lot of things IMHO get explained really quickly. People do learn and copy things from what they see on tv, whether they make sense or not.
This is gonna sound kind of weak, but i really think there is nothing wrong with video games , there is clearly a difference in meaning and consequences between killing a load of pixels on a screen and ending the life of someone who has a family and friends who won't come back after the words game over appears on screen. i do think Cialdini's law of social proof helps explain why that obvious fact gets suspended momentarily.
I don't think that violent games and tv should be barred, i think people should be educated about this principle and trained to think in the heat of the moment whereas right now, they just might react.
As soon as I read that German kid played Counter Strike I knew some retard would drag out this particular horse corpse.
yes, computer games make kids violent, it's not the cause ffs you retards.
Violent video games are classified exactly the same as films now. we never sell a video game to anyone who looks under 21. Its poor parenting that lets children and teens access to violent material. i wonder if he has any kids? have they ever watched or played a game not suitable for their age group? there in lies the problem. not the content, but responsible access from those in the guardianship. idiot.
