Biggest downside is battery life - you need to be careful with which apps you leave open since some aren't programmed particularly well and drain it like hell. I'm getting decent mileage out of it since turning down the screen brightness.
Gmail, Calendar and Text interfaces are all very nice, and it's good to have things just synching for me - no need to go off and look for email yourself.
Bit of a pain getting your contacts on there in the first place (only one number per contact comes over off the sim card, not helpful if you've got mobile and home numbers for people) but once done it intergrates nicely with the other apps - one click to call/send a text/e-mail or view address on a map.
Marketplace app quality is variable - some of the apps are awful, but others are pretty popular and quite useful. Paid apps are due soon - those should include some of the key stuff that's missing at the moment compared to the iPhone.
No multi-touch on the browser - the hardware supports it, Android doesn't. Apparently Google 'agreed' with Apple not to implement the feature.
The look of the thing speaks for itself, although in fairness the hinge is pretty decent quality. HTC Magic'll go some way to sorting those complaints once it's out.
