i want to get to spain but i'm scared shitless of flying. what are my options?
My friends got the train from London - Barcelona last year, it took about 12 hours.
I hate flying too so feel your pain.
wow 12 hours isn't too bad, i thought it'd take longer. does it cost much?
you should be OK, see here for more details
you'll be fine after take-off, and once you get to Spain, you'll have both the awsomeness of being on holiday AND the pride at having flown when you're scared of flying.
I'm a bad flyer. You'll be fine.
is somewhat different to having a morbid fear of flying.
SERIOUSLY...get a train. It'll probably cost more though.
My sister recommends some herbal calming tablets before flying. Work a treat, apparently. I'm not sure what they're called but you can get them from Holland & Barrett or somewhere similar
Through the UK, across the Channel, down through France and then somehow over/around/through the Pyrennees. It would take forever, but take a film crew and make a documentary out of it.
well...steered it across the channel and then cruised through bits of France
i want to get to Japan and Australia but the flying part is putting me off
you'll just have to mtfu
or get drunk
as I forget I'm in the air after a while, but hate shorter journeys. Weird.
it's like 3 or 4 hours. there's nothing to be scared of! it'll be cheaper and take less time to get there and means more time on holiday.
if you decide to get the train i'd stop off places along the way, kinda make THAT the holiday if you get me?
i can read a whole book before i get out there
Somewhere quick, get used to the idea.
that's what i did. worked a treat. i'm still very anxious at airports/on planes but that certainly helped.
than dying on the plane.
i'm scared shitless of driving as well. death machines
I really do. Flying scares the shit out of me, always has - and it never gets any easier. I'll take a train or coach whenever possilbe - even if it takes six times as long, as it has done in some cases :-/
Diazepan really does help though - you should go to your GP and insist on some, seriously.
The first GP to prescribe them to me gave me a few 5mg tablets, and told me to take one just before the flight. He must have been having a laugh - did absolutely nothing for me. My next GP gave me some 10mg ones, and I find that I need to take at least 1 1/2 to 2 pills before I get that nice "aaaaah...I actually don't give a fuck if this plane falls from the sky" feeling.
i think the guardian's 'stories from plane crash survivors' feature kicked it off. i fucking hate it..absolutely hate it. it's the most terrifying awful thing i can imagine in day to day life...sheer torture for however long i fly. i just dope myself up before hand..it's the only way...that or being sat next to the girl of my dreams and having a great conversation. drugs or girls. drugs or girls. only way.
so doping myself up is not a great idea really, unless i can time it to perfection so the effects wear off just as the plane lands. it is terrifying, and it doesn't get any better when the plane is in the air, not for me anyway
planes themselves actually terrify me...i don't even have to be on one....just a look at one and it freezes my bones..the entire aesthetic....they're like airborne waiting rooms. flying fancy with all the extra space would probably help.
It's not like you won't be able to function once you land or anything. The effect will wear off during the course of the flight, but the relaxed feeling you get from them for 90% of the flight helps you to stay relaxed even as they wear off - if that makes sense? They help you realise that you're worried about nothing.
You might have to deal with a slight headache once you come down, but that's about it. I definitely recommend them - takes the edge right off.
Get over it
just a crappy boat like, to get you from a to b without karaoke or a golf course?....i'd be well up for that....they had it so much better in the old days.
I would imagine they only do ocean liners to New York though. Since, y'know, it's an ocean what's needing ... lined? I doubt Uncle Pete's fishing vessel will do the job.
i was gonna hop on some old steamer with nothing but my dreams and a napsack.
Suck it up. Planes are very safe. And if you happen to get on the one that isn't, you won't have very long to regret your decision.
it's not the fear of death...it's the claustrophobia...not being able to get off for eight hours...that's the killer
if it's long haul then chances are you'll be on a nice big 747. they're fine. no more cramped than any train or bus over here.
but any trouble and i just hop off at the next available stop.
but planes seem alright. maybe you'll be alright with them too?
More likely to die in a horrific road accident in a bus or a car than you are in a plane crash
go see a doctor and get some sweet drugs.
i did it to primavera last year and was fine. even had to do it on the way back on my own cos my mate pussied out on his comedown.
