Swimming and rowing are great but require investments. Running is probably the best trade-off but some people find it tedious or difficult to start with. I'd go with a combination: regular running, swim/row when you can (along with anything else you fancy), change your diet, and maybe buy some variable-weight dumbells.
Eventually you get more efficient at doing one particular activity, so varying it is good for burning calories.
my knees are a bit screwed after playing the drums and doing karate, so it's great for no impact on my poorly legs.
however, i would agree with the sentiments that you need something that's going to keep you interested, otherwise you just won't bother.
how about a sport like squash? burns loads, but you're playing a game so you'll probably go longer than you usually do
i find listening to music usually helps as well!
also, i find the best way to lose weight and keep it off is to build muscle, although saying that, i'm not particularly big.
Muscle weighs more than fat, which is why cardio work tends to be better for weight loss.
