i can't really get involved with a novel now because of uni work.
really really good. one of my favourite books. modern and very surreal. deff. try it out.
i have that. it is awesome :) have you got blind willow, sleeping woman'? that's really good too.
this is really good
F. Scott Fitzgerald - The Diamond as Big as the Ritz
Z. Z. Packer - Drinking Coffee Elsewhere
The Best American Non-Required Reading series is great too, they're published on fiction, non-fiction, sport writing, and usually really interesting, often edited by Dave Eggers I think.
yes to Truman Capote
Some of the stories are very, very short. Perfect for dipping in and out of. I doubt it's expensive, either
A couple of utter corkers in there - the story called My Father Mask made my skin crawl and my head spin real bad...
In Persuasion Nation >George Saunders
No One Belongs Here More Than You >Miranda July
a fantastic book with quirky stories that aren't TOO pretentious
i should add this is all 4 of her collections in one book. She's amazingly good
very strange, kinda harks to murakami actually, and how he writes relationships. it's good.
dunno if anyone will agree, but i like it, it kept me sane through many lunch breaks of a job i hated.
Hemingway - The Snows of Kilimanjaro
Richard Yates - Eleven Kinds of Loneliness (or the collected stories)
Oscar Wilde's short stories.
or if you've got 20 minutes spare right now...
his short stories are far removed from his children's novels; some of them are pretty dark
I believe they have some of the same stories though, right? Anyway, it's ace.
I was talking about Borges.
A Universal History of Infamy
by hemingway or murakami
The Wine Dark Sea- Sciascia
are 2 beautifully written short story collection by slightly lesser known authors. Both are great introductions to some amazing prose :)
Closely observed trains and too loud a solitude by Bohumil Hrabal
Both more like short novels i guess, but they won't take you long/ he's one of my favorite authors ever!
The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter...breathtaking.
Has loads of stories written by some of the finest US writers since WWII, really essential, definitely look for it. I'd agree with getting your hands on Hemingway, Capote and Chekhov collections.
James Joyce's Dubliners is fantastic as well.
And make sure you get JD Salinger's Nine Stories, if only for 'A Perfect Day For Bananafish', it's one of the best things I've ever read in my life. Just perfect.
Hurbert Selby Jr. - song of the silent snow
Guy De Maupassant - wordsworth classic collection
the oxford collection of japanese short stories. Can't recommend it highly enough.
Twilight Of The Superheroes by Deborah Eisenberg is brilliant as is most of Alice Munro's stuff
'Other People' is the best short story ever written. 'Overseasoned' by Anton Chekhov comes a close second though
"For Sale: baby shoes, never worn."
That's it, six words.
though preferably his complete short stories.
raymond carver - 'will you please be quiet, please?' (Robert Altman's 'Shortcuts' was based on carver's stories)
and bukowski's 'most beautiful woman in town'
six short stories read by Jarvis.
I'm in it!
Reading Mona Lisa Overdirve at the moment, I re-read the bigend books, now re-reading the sprawl series and I'll probably do the bridge trilogy next.
a friend of mine wrote this - its an incredible read - i think there are about 5 or 6 stories all together. you wont be disappointed.
Nightmares and Dreamscapes
Four Past Midnight
Raymond Carver is worth checking out
Also, For Esme, with Love and Squalor by JD Salinger
You won't read this now will you?
Essays of Elia by Charles Lamb
His style is really enjoyable to read - flowing and eloquent - and the stories themselves are sympathetic, psychological and subjective in a way that reminds me of Kazuo Ishiguro, or someone of that ilk, even though Zweig was pre-war.
Try Fantastic Night, Amok, Burning Secret, Confusion...
just get any Edgar Allen Poe collection. You can probably find one in a charity shop for 50p.
