It's The Office
You have to be kidding.
It isn't even the funniest sitcom called The Office.
In contrast, The Office, out of around 80 episodes aired so far, I reckon there to be about 3 duds. It has the best writing of any sitcom I've ever seen. Including Gervais' effort.
The ham radio episode still has me in tears though.
Stupendously over scripted. '30 jews in a room' churning out cheap little disposable wisecracks by the hundred.
yeah there were alot of annoying not that funny wisecracks but there were also alot of genuinely funny bits that it never really gets credit for especially in latter seasons. The problem with frasier is that it was a good program and all but the laughs just werent there.
consistently brilliant right up until when niles and daphne got together, after which it was only sometimes funny
i think my favourite bit in a frasier episode is when he's going out with a model and no-one believes him, so he takes a photo of her asleep in his bed and she catches him and storms out in front of everyone, so then he's all "there! you see her now?" etc. mightylaugh
After Niles and Daphne got together - no. But when Frasier was at its best it was brilliant.
Seinfeld runs Frasier very close.
'The series won 37 prime-time Emmys during its 11-year run, breaking the record long held by The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Grammer and Pierce each won four, including one each for the final season. The series holds the record for the most consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series, winning five from 1994 to 1998'
Today I saw the episode where Niles goes in for heart surgery. Never fails to get to me, right in my own heart, even though I know he's going to be okay. Although I kind of hate Daphne in that episode, because she's all "HE'S MY HUSBAND AND YOU DON'T LOVE HIM LIKE I LOVE HIM", and it's like STFU Daphne, you didn't even love him until a bunch of episodes ago. That's his father and brother/best friend you're talking to!
arrested development (RIP)
durrrrrrrrrrrrr theres no question about it
Alongside Seinfeld, sure, why not?
Ham Radio - http://tinyurl.com/cdbgaq
in some cases it got better as it went along.
Definitely a contender, as is Seinfeld. As they both ran for so long though there's inevitably a few rubbish episodes in there.
I'd say Arrested Development or Curb.
though frasier is up there- the only problems are when they do serious episodes. the episode where frasier and niles end up in a gay bar in tight squash shorts is amazing.
never going for sentimentality, and not bothering with a 'will Jerry and Elaine get together?' angle through the whole thing.
But both Frasier and Seinfeld had the inspired characters - Niles Crane and George Costanza especially
Curb hasnt had a bad episode yet, amazing seeing as its pretty much all improv
I can't ever remember laughing out loud at Frasier
it seems too self-conscious of what it is.
Sweeping generalisation of course, but I'm having trouble thinking of an exception at this precise moment.
The Larry Sanders Show, Seinfeld, Cheers and Curb your Enthusiasm are all better than Frasier if you ask me.
must have seen a fair few but it's never made me laugh.....and i find something really fucking depressing about roz....an insidious, nearby sort of depressing.....like when the boy keeps smelling his mothers rotting corpse from the shed in concrete garden...that's how she makes me feel when i hear her voice.
a hell of a lot. Hard to be truly consistent over however many series it ran for, but it did pretty well.
I would nominate Arrested Development as an alternative, but I suppose the last season was sort of patchy. Certainly the cleverest sitcom, though.
no hugs, no learning, no explanations or backstories, never dump the comedy to do an emotional soap episode.
Seinfeld is hideously overrated (though still good). Curb is fantastic, but it's no Frasier, Arrested Development is amazing, but it's no Frasier etc.... until the end of time.
And that whole 'went south when Niles and Daphne got together' is bull; it was still amazing.
Niles is a brilliant brilliant character, Martin is a brilliant character, Bebe (Frasier's agent) is priceless, and Kelsey Grammar as Frasier is just phenomenal.
Yep, Frasier is the best, objectively, the best.
closely followed by AD. Then about a million miles behind is frasier.
this reply makes the most sense so far, i can't fault the american office, and arrested development is just brilliant!
are better than the whole of Frasier?
Arrested Development wins this thread hands down.
up till then it is brilliant.
However the best are:
1) Arrested Development (greatest tv programme of all time)
2) Curb your enthusiasm
Honourable mention to the brilliant Larry Sanders show!
I was laughing out loud at it only this morning. To those who say Arrested Development: it was very funny, but only for three seasons and the third season was a lot weaker than the others. Frasier was funny the whole time, even after Daphne/Niles got together. Plenty of very funny stuff happened after that! What about the one where Niles's snobby friends mistake Martin for a famous painter? And Frasier is hiding in the kitchen making his signature sauce. That's a great episode.
