Where do / would you live thats just outside London and commutable?

eg. Hitchin? St Albans? Stratford?

The girlfriend and I are thinking that for the price of a 1 bedroom flat in Zone 2-5, we can possibly get a 3 bedroom house a bit further out if the market keeps falling.

Any of you folks live just out of town and recommend a good place to live and commute in from?
