Frost / Nixon

trans-siberian [Edit] [Delete] 20 replies 11:25, 20 January '09

I saw this last night, it was really really good. Who knew that a film about a series of TV interviews could be exciting? The performances were excellent, particularly Frank Langella as Nixon.

Anyone else seen it? What did you reckon?

  • yep

6/10 for me. Good, well made, Langella is very good, as is Kevin Bacon. Couldn't warm to Frost at all though...and it was a tad too glamourous at times.

    • Yeah, I think Frost is meant to be a bit of a cunt though

but less of a cunt than Nixon.

      • yeah no doubt

but he is portrayed in it like the underdog...it reminded me a bit of Dodgeball in suits at times.

  • I have seen it and really enjoyed it.

One of the better films i saw last year. Thought all the performances were very good and was good to see Sam Rockwell back as I haven't see him in a while.

  • yep there are some good ones out

I still haven't seen the Wrestler, I want to see that and Che: Part One before they leave the cinemas. What else is looking good?

    • Milk is another political one

      that looks worth a viewing.

      • ah yeah

I have heard really good things about that too. I'll keep an eye out for it opening.

  • I am off to see Milk tonight which I am very much looking forward to.

  • Did you see the play?

That was terrific. I've not seen the film yet, so it'd be interesting to see how it compares.

    marckee | 20 Jan '09, 11:35 | X
    • No I have not seen the play, in fact I didn't know there was a play of it.

      Lo-Pan @marckee | 20 Jan '09, 11:36 | X
    • Afraid not

am I right that it was Sheen and Langella in the play as well as the film? I imagine it was probably fantastic then, but I don't think it played up here.

      trans-siberian @marckee | 20 Jan '09, 11:37 | X
      • Yeah, it was Langella and Sheen.

  • Films based on plays are usually shite.

Stilted, wordy and deeply un-cinematic are the words that spring to mind. Frost/Nixon has a great cast and im really interested in the subject matter, but im put off by the fact its adapted from a stage production and its directed by Schlock-meister Ron Howard. Sell it to me someone?

    Bundoz | 20 Jan '09, 11:42 | X
    • I am not normally a fan of Ron Howards films but this is well shot.....

the editing is sharp as is most of the dialogue. It doesn't drag and is well acted by both the main actors and the ensemble cast. Also great subject matter.

    • Well, if you’ve not seen the play, but did want to, then this is as close as you’ll get.

Ron Howard is actually a pretty decent director if he’s constrained by the script, plot, location and characters. If he has to keep everything intimate and upclose (like with Apollo 13), he’s certainly adept at showing how a handful of characters play off each other, and if he strays towards the sombre rather than the sentimental, he’s able to keep hold of my attention. I’m not expecting a cinematic show, but I actually have some confidence that Howard will let the actors do the work and will produce something quite riveting.

  • I am really looking forward to this

Frost/Nixon, The Wrestler, Che films, Milk, Slumdog and possibly even Valkyrie make this a great first month for my cineworld card.

    • It’s the same every year though.

January and February in the UK are always choc-a-bloc with the films that got a US release to tie in with the awards season nominations.

      marckee @kenako | 20 Jan '09, 12:06 | X
      • oh I know

doesn't stop me enjoying it though

        kenako @marckee | 20 Jan '09, 12:23 | X
  • I've heard...

On quasi-reliable authority, that the film is better than the play, or at least the performance from London last year.

I loathe most plays turned into films*; although Julie Taymor's Titus is quite affable.

(Closer* by Peter O'Hanrahanrahan. I mean.... honestly!)
