last.fm might have found out who stole my computer
there are plays on my account for yesterday. mac was stolen on saturday. they are checking to see if they can track the IP address of the plays now. fingers crossed...

you'd easily be able to sell this story to a trashy women's magazine. you'd probably have to exaggerate it a bit though. tell them they tortured your pet dog before they stole your stuff.
can you specifically track a postal address from an IP one?
Or does it cover a specific area?

they can get the provider to give them a time stamp for that IP, tracks it to the house as far as i know.

I hope that LastFM kept the guy listening for as long as possible, while in the background a tech whiz wearing large headphones was sat in front of computer screen that made lots of unnecessary bleeps as the IP address was tracked one number at a time – before giving a silent thumbs up when it was complete.

UPDATE
so it all went quiet on the police front, so decided to chase it up myself. i spoke to someone at a large multinational IP who was useless - didn't want to help. but, it turns out that the most recent IP address was a smaller provider.
i rang this ISP, who have pretty much traced it to the house. i could hear the guy on the phone getting excited as he looked it up, he genuinely wanted me to get my computer back. he is now getting their police liaison to get in touch with the officer dealing with the theft, basically with the news that they have found it.
will update as soon as i get any more news.

we'll run a news story/feature as when i mentioned this to a few people they were fascinated by it.
semi-update (beacuse KiK reminded me about it)
so the police have applied for a permit to follow up on the nailed on lead which was given to them on a plate. they need to get permission to follow it up because it is to do with the internet. really really frustrating, i've given it up for dead to be honest.

Similar thing happened to my family.
Some guy had my grandad's bank details and was frauding him out of loads of money.
My mum did all the work, even found out the guy's name, address, age, job etc. Took the police about 9 months to do anything. Eventually he was arrested and tried. I think he got 140 hours community service. God bless justice.

Interesting story and how good of Last.fm to help out. Hope you get your laptop back and they catch the thief. Looks like things are going a bit too slowly for this to become much of a plot in a detective series without a lot of spicing up.

phone call from the police this morning, who have got the name and address of the person who owns that internet connection, they are going round today to hopefully get my mac back. i do really appreciate them doing this, but it would have been far more useful if they did it about three weeks ago...

that is an amazing story!! Police should be urging more people to install last.fm on their comps! So is the thief getting charged? Could have lead to him getting done for more burglaries if they raided his place.
so, the story as of today
they investigated an address, and recovered the computer. the person with it had paid a decent price to buy it, and from talking to the police he is a genuine guy and gutted that a) he'd bought a stolen computer and b) he was subsequently loosing said computer.
the chap who had bought it is now providing the police with details of who he bought it from. as such the police are retaining the computer for the time being in case it can be used in evidence against the guy who sold it on, who we can hope was the original thief.

Of course it wouldnt be the guy who stole it that would be scroblling tracks to last.fm, it'd be some poor fool that the criminal sold it to... but im more surprised i was the only person on here that realised this...

On a related note, a friend of mine got his stolen camera back the other day. Apparently the police were investigating another theft, and found some chap who'd horded a whole room full of stuff he'd stolen. They found a camera but weren't sure whose it was, so they went through the pictures on the camera, and found one of my friend at his parent's house holding their pet dog. They managed to zoom in enough to see the phone number on the dog's collar, and called his mum to check if he'd had a camera stolen recently. He picked it up the other day.
