anyone give a shit? personally it looks like another attempt to turn windows into a shabby version of OS X.
If it's better than Vista I'll look forward to the upgrade.
OS X is apparently great. Now if only Apple could see their way to offering the same wide range of hardware configurations as PCs do I might own it. As it is their choices are depressingly narrow and limited.
i'm a vista at work, OS X at home kinda guy. vista does everything i need of it during the day, and i've about got the hang of the office ribbons now. still, i'd rather have my mac here instead.
Nice baiting comment there. Vista is great, I've never had any problems. I don't want an overpriced Macbook with less power than my laptop that I bought at the time and I like playing old legacy Windows games. If 7 is "better" than Vista, then fuck me, it'll be great.
Anyone who thinks Vista is bad either is hung up XP, is being led by a small minority, or has had a bad experience with it... it is a solid OS apart from a few little niggles.
OSX has a big head start on any Windows OS because it always comes installed on top notch hardware for which it has been specifically optimised.
People buy £300 PC laptops and then wonder why they're a piece of shit. Apple stuff is overpriced but not by much. As long as you make a PC from quality components or buy a quality PC then Windows shouldn't give you any issues. OSX is still a better OS but I think 99% of the time your average user won't care.
If you go onto the Dell website or similar and configure yourself a machine to the same specs as an iMac, the price more often than not comes out pretty much the same these days, give or take £50. Apple certainly seem to mainly shoot for a premium end of the market - they don't build the cheap stuff that many do, but if you want the same specs out of a PC you need to pay similar money now.
That said, the rest of your argument I largely agree with, in particular that Windows can be fine on a decent machine that's well built.
I wasn't going to do it, but I'm downloading Windows 7 to have a play with. Haven't used Vista, so it should be a sea change.
I stand by that. VAIO and the other manufacturers are the same. I simply meant that you could buy component parts yourself for less and you can get things cheaper. I don't have anything against Apple. Well built machines.
but you've gotta pay for labour as well... paying just for components against a prebuilt/installed machine isn't really comparable. Price difference is useful for those of us who can build our own though!
but it should run pretty well as Vista is a breeze on it.
is what you do in August/September when the beta expires... you'll have to reinstall something else. I'll be sticking 7 on a spare Hard Drive I've got knocking around, so keeping my XP install around. Something that's worth you thinking about before you take the plunge.
By all accounts it runs very well though.
or does the beta not allow that?
I just tend to be a bit wary about doing that ever since some horrible experiences with Windows 98 obliterating everything that was on the disk I chose.
before trying anything
Someone do that then tell me if I should do it also.
