It really irks me how successful he is - his photography has no artistic merit whatsoever. See also: Jonnie Craig. Just rubbish.
with all the naked people innit
all his stuff involves naked people
you don't like naked people?
His work reminds me of warmth and late summer nights. If you can evoke an emotional response in a person, I deem that piece a success, regardless of if it's good or bad.
how's the banjo?
Staring at naked girls hurts your eyes eh?
What guitar are you getting? I'm still ploughing on with mine. It's hard work though. My mate is going to give me some lessons and someone to play with and learn from. First one on Sunday. Can't wait as he's really good and be teaching a few others as well.
I know about 10-12 chords but learning new ones weekly. I should probably practice more but it's coming on. And more to the point I'm still doing it after 4 months.
I'd love a go on uke.
Also, the photos are pretty cool. Most/all artists have a certain style, a certain furrow they plough and in which they are masters. Saying this guy is overrated because he only does pictures juxtaposing nakedness with things that aren't associated with nakedness is like slating Rothko for doing paintings of block color or Banksy of only doing grafitti.
I really don't think he is as good as his success suggests.
I mean, do you object more that he's popular in a 'Shoreditch Twat' way or do you just think he's a bit rubbish?
Would you like him if he was obscuro? And it's fair question: is he only popular because he shows nakedness so middle-class men can enjoy seeing naked ladies without feeling guilty by buying porn?
(I'd say yes for sure to that last one. Nothing's more likely to sell than porn dressed as art. Still, his photos DO look good to me. Who would you have in his place?)
I wouldn't like him if he was the most obscure photographer in the world. I just think he's a bit rubbish, and not good enough to be omnipresent in Vice, for example. There are a lot of better photographers out there.
What a load of bollocks.
Those Jonnie Craig photos look like rejected American Apparel ads.
apart from this one
i don't know what this one is supposed to be
not as good/bad but as in the y'know quality the camera and development gives them
I like the colours and composition and slightly odd-focusing and stuff.
Hate the Jonnie Craig photos. I mean, am I missing something here http://www.huhmagazine.co.uk/jonniecraig/images/9.jpg ? This is just a terrible, terrible, boring photo, right?
or something of your facebook? That's crap, loads of shadows, poorly composed, cropped, etc. It also looks like it's been taken on a digicam. Am I missing something?
even though the "daft naked people" thing gets old surprisingly quick.
The second one is just shit.
he's just really really ordinary.
see the comments.
i think, back in the day, he wasn't all that terrible.
on that link posted, the photo of the, sadly no longer with us, girl in the back of the car (Lily Wheelwright) and the guy spraypainting the side of the building are pretty good, and fairly representative of what he was doing before he started shooting naked people with weird colour filters and low shutter speed. i liked the ambient shoegaziness of his pictures, while still obviously capturing real situations.
since then though, agreed, he's gone to shit. the naked people with the silly colours are, well, silly...
i like the one of the girl with the flowers (?) and the blonde girl at the desk too.
Now I'm just waiting for McGinley to tell me what he thinks.
but i quite like the quality of mcginley's photos
the jonnie craig stuff...it reminds me of nan goldin, quite intimate. it does kind of have that cheap snapshot quality, but that's actually kind of rare and maybe 'artistic' now in that people don't really take pictures like that anymore - everyone tries to 'compose' their shots and gets rid of pictures they don't like (so no, it didn't look like a typical facebook picture, maybe an imitation of what facebook pictures would have been like if camera technology was about ten years behind)
i thought the picture of the crying girl someone posted would be better in a context - it probably works in a series rather than on its own
i quite like em. don't let it irk you so
Thanks for your kind words. Photography is really just a hobby for me at the minute, but one day I'd like to have a book out, and do an exhibition. I'm really encouraged by what you said though. Socially relevant? Oh my! I thought I might start by popping round to the Vice offices and making cups of tea, and take it from there. A good idea, you think?
Because of you've been kind enough to encourage me and critique my work, I'm going to do the same for you. I really admire your style in some ways. Who else could take so many images of their mates naked, completely disregarding any concept of framing, and make a living from it? If people are dumb enough to keep buying this shit, good luck to you I say!
Just one word of advice though, read and follow these steps to avoid the flash blow out that seems to be prevalent on so many of your shots.
Kindest regards, and good luck!
Y'know, whenever you have a break from fellating Gavin McInnes et al.
