EARN £55 BY TAKING PART IN AN INTERESTING SPEECH STUDY
We need 20 pairs of volunteers to take part in a series of speech
recordings.
These involve doing a variety of tasks: a 'spot the difference' game,
picture naming and sentence reading.
OUTLINE
The study is split into 5 sessions each lasting between 45mins and 1hr
40mins.
For sessions 1 and 2, you and a friend will be recorded while trying
to resolve a 'spot the difference' task, in which you have to find
differences between two pictures.
You will attend session 3 by yourself. The task is the same as in the
first two sessions but this time you will be recorded talking to a
stranger about 3 pictures.
In sessions 4 and 5, you will be recorded by yourself and you will be
asked to name pictures and read sentences that appear on a computer
screen in front of you.
APPROXIMATE SESSION DURATIONS
Session 1 – 1hr
Session 2 – 1hr 40mins
Session 3 – 45mins
Session 4 – 1hr
Session 5 – 1hr 10mins
Each session must be done on a different day but the five sessions
should be completed within a 2 to 3 week period.
REQUIREMENTS
In order to participate you must volunteer with a friend. You and a
friend must…
- be monolingual native Southern British English speakers, i.e.
you were both born and grew up in the UK,
were not fluent in another language from a young age (learning another
language in school is acceptable)
and currently have a standard southern British English accent
- be the same gender
- be between 18 and 35 years of age
- have no known hearing or speech difficulties. (Note that your
hearing will be briefly tested at the start of session 1.)
- not have participated in a similar study that was run by Ian
Cushing in August and that involved 'spot the difference' tasks.
PAYMENT
You will each be paid £55 in total for taking part in the study.
You will be paid in 3 instalments: £10 after session 1, £20 after
session 3 and £25 after session 5.
LOCATION
All sessions take place in Chandler House, Wakefield Street WC1N 1PF,
near the main UCL campus.
