oh yeah, a link to a nice long list
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/front_page/7804849.stm
And the ignoring...
of Mark Cavendish continues despite the fact he did something no Briton has ever done before...
The list of people in sport passed over for honours etc is pretty daft
Nick Faldo should have a bloody knighthood by now considering his career
^this
Cav has been criminally overlooked since the tour.
He'll probably win a bunch of stages (and maybe even the Green jersey) next year
and still get passed over.
Another example of the dumbing down of the Honours list.
Always an anachronism anyway, recent years have seen what could (or should, depending on your views, I'm not going to get into that) be the very pinnacle of achievement for a subject of the British Isles completely thrown away in favour of gaining kudos from the public at large.
Honours should be given (if at all) at the end of a career, and should be more than earned. I'm not denying for one second that Chris Hoy is magnificent at what he does, but rewarding him now, while he is still riding, smacks of wanting to impress people who shouldn't matter. I hate the 21st century NOW NOW NOW culture, and this is merely another example of it.
GOOD. DAY.
This post was brought to you by the spirit of John Dunkirk Traynor.
wow, this is the angriest i think i've ever seen you at a non-pocketmouse post
pfff
you're boring
i mean, you're right
but SNORE
I hope you get knighted and she accidentally swords the fuck out of your neck.
More lyrics bam bam?
Bizarrely close to a fantasy of mine
What, me singing lyrics at you?
I'm going for an MBE for Services To Comedy Rapping.
they lost all meaning when the Queen said "Arise, Sir Tom Jones"
i think Sir Chris Hoy will be great fun at the olympics
"In the Men's Keirin final, Sir Christopher Hoy of Dunedin, Great Britain (hoooray, wooooo, yeaaaaah, etc) versus Scott 'Dirty Dingo' Robinson of Oz (boooooooo, hissssss, you suck, etc)"
he's already Sir David Beckham in my mind
as he should be in all yours. a latter-day saint
It's outdated anachoristic bollocks really.
In the vast majority of cases it's either
a) rampant populism
b) political cronyism
c) a self-important backslap for self-important bigwigs in local councils, governemnt or whatever other role.
There are occasional cases where someone gets rewarded for years of service to a community and it's probably a very nice day out for them but I'm not a huge fan of the honours list in general.
Basically anybody who did anything good in sport before Labour came to power...
Though I think it probably all stems from the Rugby World Cup winning squad...I guess you can just about justify that, but only at a very big stretch.
In a few years you'll be a failure in sport if you don't have an honour.
But anyway, I think MBEs are fine for short term sporting achievment, like Adlington and Hamilton, and OBE for longer term stuff/a massive achievment say like Hoy.
But Knighthoods shouldn't be given out so easily. Look at Botham for instance, there's a man who was an upstanding servant to both cricket and charity, but less so commentary.
thats SIR Chris Hoy to you
Not yet...
More importantly...
when will the queen recognise the fact that Les Ferdinand has an honorary knighthood bestowed upon him by the people of Great Briton? For services in trashing the Blue Peter garden or something...
y'see
kids
they listen to the rap music
which gives them the brain damage
Only last night I was told that Liz Smith was dead.
Clearly not.
Dead pleased to be in the honours list!
I was dubious
Jon Madjeski is knighted too
for charity work.
and Steve Staunton remains unknighted :(
:)
pathetic.
Olympic athletes are supposed to be good at what they do.
Robert Plant CBE
Sir Terry Pratchett
for God's sake...
Er...
That's one that ia actually well deserved, he's a great author.
He wrote one good book
Then he wrote it again, another 20 times.
He did?
I think the Discworld series is terrific, and it's actually got better over time.
I HATE SEBASTIAN COE!
He speaks very highly of you
you could make more money begging on the street, even if you were twice as ugly as you are which is very ugly indeed
is it a coincidance
that Hoy sounds a bit chines?
p.s.
Wouldn't it be nice to get a...
