Were you left alone to look after yourself much when you were a child?

eschaton [Edit] [Delete] 10:37, 23 December '08

Dunno why I started thinking about this last night during my work xmas meal (oh yes, I remember why now; because I was bored out of my fucking mind), but I suddenly remember some event from my childhood whereby I was left a few quid each day during any school holiday to get myself food and such while my mum was at work (for it was her who I lived with). So I'd walk into the local village (about 4 or 5 miles) and get stuff from the supermarket, but I didn't realise at the time you had to buy sandwich meat off the fresh meat counter in weight, so I used to say stuff like, "Can I have 1 slice of that ham please?" and it'd come to like 7p or something daft. For some reason I was finding this super funny in my head last night.

Err, anyway, so I was in Primary 5 or 6 in Scotland at the time, which would have made me about the age of 10 (geting on towards 11). Is this a bit young to leave a child alone to basically look after themself? Is it irresponsible parenting? Or is it acceptible? Would you let your 10 year old son or daughter look after themselves alone all day? I never really got into much trouble or hurt myself too badly (I did fall off a chair once and really hurt my hand by landing arkwardly on it actually), and I just cooked for myself and all that. But I remember mum telling me not to tell anyone.
