What was it about the Stephen Lawrence murder that gave it such extensive coverage?

I'm not talking about the subsequent investigation, but the murder itself?

Did something exceptionally horrible happen to him, like to Jamie Bulger? Or was it the case that all stabbings got that much press back then, but now the press is desensitised towards them?
