again! haha poor Wenger
And honestly, supporting the same team you do, I'd much prefer we actually won a bit of silverware in a full blooded match against Everton than "urr yeah we got to the semis and than got beaten by Chelsea 2-1 in a dull-fuck-athon, but technically mate it's more of an achievement that if you think about it"
i'd much rather have a trophy on the shelf than another season of being not quite runners up
i'd rather stay up... but other than that
because I don't share your view on the inherent value of a sport competition...
Obviously getting to the last 8 would be great but are you honestly saying you would rather have that than watch your team lift a cup? Nobody's going to remember either fact in 8 year's time, but I would certainly cherish the day I great deal more.
success this season though.
How comes? We got through to the quarter finals of a cup with our youth team. That's not really that bad, is it? I don't think any Arsenal fans will be losing any sleep over it
Don't you support Newcastle?
arsenal could've won something this season - what chance did we ever have?
arsenal use the carling cup for youth development, it's not something that's been taken seriously since Wenger's first season. it's ultimately newcastle's fault that there's no challenge there, i remember how easy it was for an arsenal team not much different from this one to push them aside last season.
when you consider arsenal's operating costs in terms of their youth development it's purely down to the deficencies of other sides that they aren't emulating them.
deeply routed in the 'success' of Keegans 90s sides and the lack of long term vision that accompanied and followed it.
if we'd had a character like wenger who wanted to really build teams and develop players we'd probably still be routine top 6/7 finishers/
when wenger took over arsenal were stuck in a small stadium and hadn't challenged for the title in 5 years. there was a drinking culture at the club and most of the best players were aging. the only issue newcastle will ever have that isn't completely avoidable is just attracting players to the north east over london or wherever, and even that isn't such a barrier when you look at a club like Napoli. the difference is that Arsenal didn't make excuses while most other clubs did.
to what extent our 'fans' would tolerate someone trying to build a *team* over a number of seasons when we could be splashing out on a 'proven' player who is hoped to boost the rest of our existing squad to the past glories of his previous teams (Owen, Kluivert, etc)
Come on they aren't that bad. All you have to do is bang on about 'building a team' and 'planning for the future' all the time. Roy Keane has been building a team for a while and any time now we're going to start going up the table. Wheeee!!
Or you could just get a 'big name' manager to pull the good players in
obviously things have moved on since then, but you can still have a massive improvement with just a bit of good management - it certainly doesn't always require years of team building. the improvement of a lot of the italian sides now is purely because they've all had financial problems and they realise that spending a little on a scouting network and young players pays for itself. the fans are ignorant knobs at all clubs, and any chairman listening to them deserves to fail.
We're through to the next phase of the Champions League, and the FA Cup hasn't even started yet (for us). Plus, I know it's highly unlikely, but we're only 8 points behind the league leaders, and there's still six months of the season to go. Of course that's optimistic, but stranger things have happened
Also, do you honestly think that pundits, fans etc would've looked back on this season as a success if we'd just won the Carling Cup? It would've been great for the 'kids', and to some extent would've been a vindication of Wenger's youth policy, but the Carling Cup means fuck all for a club like Arsenal. It's not like the criticisms of us would've gone away by winning the Carling Cup, is it? It means nothing. Even for Spurs, it ultimately means nothing - who's gonna be remembering them beating Chelsea in two years from now?
A Newcastle fan writing off Arsenal's entire season is pretty hilarious
Didn't you lose to Histon at the weekend?
arsenal will achieve nothing.
to qualify for the Big Cup, both will probably happen but big potential for neither.
but seriously, BOTHERED!
and league still isn't totally out of the question!
If Arsenal win their remaining games against liverpool / chelsea / man utd, stop dropping stupid points against the other clubs, and the other three all draw with each other a lot, then it is still very much ON.
This is the strongest the premier league has been in years too, so the other "big three" dropping points against the other teams is more likely than ever too. 7 points isn't really anything.
at least, not one that's getting shit on every week. For the first time in years, it actually seems like anyone could beat anyone at any time, and results so far this year demonstrate this.
but this thread just highlights how many idiots there are on here in regards to discussing football.
