but I figured that people were far too busy with their internerd sex-life berating and their judgements of 'I'm a celebrity...' and their open letters to blah blah blah
that and the fact that I don't know what to say about it other than 'shit'
I'm trying to guess at a motive for what seems like some kind of guerilla takeover of Mumbai but I can't think of one worth risking certain death for
anyone know who the 'Deccan Mujahideen' are?
can anyone link me to where I can watch BBC news online?
Yeah, that'll do for me. Shit.
They reckon ISLAMIC extremists are responsible!?
Who'd have thought it? Islamic extremists?
I was always under the impression it was an entirely peaceful religion.
The Taj Mahal can't go up surely!
you're about 2000km off
Mumbai is about 200km from the Taj Mahal
Well in my mind a seige is taking place right now at The Taj Mahal it looks amazing trust me.
CRUSH THOSE COMMIE BASTARDS!!!
theyre all commies,trust me
there's at least 16 groups of shooters in the city.
and there don't really seem to be any clear details of what's going on other than that it's still ongoing
it's very strange to see them making up dead airtime with 1 dimensional vox pop platitudes and clichés
are dire times.
and of course it is a horrendous incident no doubt
but in the grand scheme of things ??? I dunno... even on CNN the level of jingoism is unbearable
well, I've switched to IBN - the Indian CNN sister network and it is much more grounded in what's actually happening (as you might expect) rather than making grand statements about EVIL and TERROR
it's also much more gory in its presentation and the clips it's showing
hope these tactics don't become common
more like a coup attempt than a terrorist attack
and given the bloodbath as it already is, the army is just going to pile in to the various locations and there'll be a LOT more casualties
seems all kind of pointless
futile would be a better word
are they trying to capture the city or something? what are they trying to do? I don't get it...
but if they've taken enough hostages - particular western ones (yeah, I know) this whole situation could go on for days
if you open their 'watch live' player and then click on the IBN channel instead of the cnn.com channel that comes up as default - you'll see it on the right of the main window
this is nuts
who was speaking to them live on his cellphone from inside the Taj hotel and describing his experience of the last few hours, the fire and being trapped in his room etc and then machine gun fire opens up behind him and the two presenters are desperately trying to find something positive to say to him to keep him from cracking
he's over there on his own on business
the hotel is huge - there must be loads of people inside and there's 9 or 10 other locations around the city in the same condition
When I was in india I went to this hotel to have tea. It really is huge and its always pretty busy and a bit of a maze to be honest.
And then my very drunk best friend called me on Skype and I kinda got distracted :$
I use on the buses when inspectors come on. Works every time.
they caught me getting on for 70p without a pass :(
a friend of mine is meant to be leaving mumbai tomorrow...
- Head of Mumbai's counter-terrorism unit, and his two subordinates, assassinated.
- Coordinated attacks upon symbolic targets.
- Specific groups of people seemingly being herded up for some purpose while the police figure out what's going on.
I heard about this a few hours ago while out, and checked it as soon as I got home. I feel sick to my stomach.
including at a hospital
and I'm presuming the hostages will be of several nationalities which means maybe days of tricky politics and negotiations
But, these are terrorists. They are stupid, and vile, and lack any kind of common sense. I don't doubt other English speaking nationalities, as well as a few random white Europeans, will get caught up in this. There's a saffa guy on the BBC website who managed to slip out at some point and report on the whole passport thing - but it seems like they're still keeping everyone under lock and key.
by Israelis in the VT area of the city
This is so fucking weird. I was at the Guardian Student Media Conference today, which was all about getting into journalism in a time of extreme flux in the industry, where the ways in which stories are broken are changing and adapting to new methods - one man with a tabbed browser can keep up to date on breaking news just as well, if not better, than a single newsroom of a dozen staff trying to do the same job and re-write it, then post it, edit, update, etc.
And here's an example of just how lacking traditional sources are. I spent all day talking about this, and now I'm watching it. Example becomes reality.
it's refreshingly direct in many ways
and it makes you suspicious about western news journalism - cnn are reporting for instance that the US consulate was one of the targets hit in the attacks, Indian TV has not mentioned that at all
Seems that CNN are the only ones.
This has all the hallmarks of some kind of serious attempt to disrupt and dismantle regional government. I seriously cannot understand how something this scale can be deemed useful otherwise. The amount of training, the cost of the equipment, the planning, the taking of hostages, the destruction of property in symbolic areas - there's no point going to all this effort just to kill people, when bombs would do it much better. It reeks of some kind of anti-state action.
I'm no expert, but sticking those men into a situation where they're likely to be killed seems insane from a terror cell standpoint. You're wiping out what must be most of your regional forces.
and the main objective here is being hidden in the confusion ???
3 of the top Indian policeman have been killed early on in the operation, two of whom were in the process of cracking down on a Right -Wing Hindu Nationalist organisation
Also, there are apparently FAR more troops concentrated on the Oberoi Hotel situation where there are 5 'foreign nationals' being held hostage on the 19th floor. Perhaps they targeted somebody specific?
And then there is the Jewish House - which is apparently used as a prayer meeting house.
It definitely doesn't seem like terrorism in the sense that we expect it - maximum carnage from an elusive and shadowy threat
(all this info is from watching Indian TV)
seems paramilitary to me
It's not like PIRA, these people don't mind dying one bit.
how many bombs have gone off in India this year?
How widespread was the coverage in the West?
that is just crazy :(
It seems that they're looking for British and Americans specifically, really scary stuff.
on holiday and be shot though, you can't just decide to never go anywhere because something might happen. It's pretty insane that it has happened, especially in a massive city like mumbai.
One of my good friends lives there, and she's never mentioned anything like this happening! That said, she's really rich, so i think she might live out of the city a bit.
I probably would rather go there anyway, India isn't my cup of tea really (too hot, probably lots of spiders)
That's a tad paranoid! But then when the rest of the world descends into world war three you'll be laughing from your nuclear bunker you've been stockpiling for 10 years ;)
Hostages, tourists attacked...
Really shocking. The scale and the confusion seems to be beyond anything previously seen.
Or is this not yet known?
who want the tour ending to prevent further embarrassment
the remaining ODI's have been called off and the test matches are in doubt.
since they're targeting tourists, foreigners and the rich elite. Muslims often feel oppressed by the far-right Hindu nationalist groups in India, but it's hard to see what they think this would actually acheive, other than choking off the tourist industry.
Unless of course it's a group of pirates trying to get revenge for when India sunk that pirate vessel last week.
Deccan Mujahadeen, who want rid of Indian rule in Kashmir.
Fucking grim shit.
