Stephen Graham as Combo in This is England

dove_from_above [Edit] [Delete] 24 replies 10:51, 25 November '08

I saw this when it came out at the cinema, and then again for the first time since last night, and I'd forgotten just how good Stephen Graham is in this film

It's a really, really convincing performance. Does anybody know if he got nuff praise for it at the time?

    • Yeah, you're probably right actually

How was that Turgoose kid in Somers Town? I haven't actually seen that film yet

      • i haven't seen it either

he's in eden lake though, which is supposed to be spectacularly violent so hopefully i'll be able to see that soon

  • Apparently

Stephen Graham is a complete nutcase and the scene where he pulls the guy out of the car wasn't on the script!

    • you can hear him irl headbut him!

  • He's a bit TOO good at it I think

I hate him when he says 'it reeks of curry'.

    crashinglikeamouse | 25 Nov '08, 11:12 | X
  • He's apparently playing Billy Bremner

in the film of The Damned United. It may not be as bad as I had first feared.

  • I always thought the one with the dark hair

was really good. You know the one who initially takes him in.

    wrightylew | 25 Nov '08, 12:32 | X
    • the really cool one?

      too_black_too_strong @wrightylew | 25 Nov '08, 12:33 | X
      • Eli from Emmerdale.

Thats a step down in anyones book.

    • In fairness

there isn't a poor performance, line or moment in that film. It's marvellous.

      crablin @wrightylew | 25 Nov '08, 12:39 | X
      • it was

overrated and got boring halfway through

        TheKennedyCurse @crablin | 25 Nov '08, 12:43 | X
        • I disagree.

          MASSIVE!

        • but the best bit is after the middle

I WILL SLAY YOU WHERE YOU STAND

          too_black_too_strong @TheKennedyCurse | 25 Nov '08, 12:46 | X
          • Yeah that scared the hell out of me...

Stephen Graham's wife teaches/taught in Hinckley, taught my dear Ru87...

  • I love the film.

But I need something explaining. The kid throws the Union Jack in the river, right? Then he looks up at the camera. BUT does this mean he's renounced the far-right or that he's just renounced Combo's idealogy, while still subscribing to the basic beliefs of the NF, BNP, etc?

    orsonwellesrabbit | 25 Nov '08, 14:55 | X
    • .

i understood it as the former, because he initially acquires the george cross flag at the BNP meeting so i took it to stand for that in his head

      isibuko @orsonwellesrabbit | 25 Nov '08, 15:02 | X
      • Ah, yes. I need to watch it again.

        Meadows is legend.

  • Eli Dingle is incredible in it.

But he's still in Emmerdale, what a waste of talent. However, on the DVD commentary it says he went back to being a bricklayer in between TIE and Emmerdale. I don't know how true that is, but if so it's awesome.

    orsonwellesrabbit | 25 Nov '08, 14:57 | X
  • i think he just plays himself really

he's from the shittiest area of liverpool. Everyone I've me from kirkby is a fucking nutcase anyway.

    prof-kitsch | 25 Nov '08, 15:01 | X
  • He's so good in this

the scene in the shop is too convincing.
