they want to put us on one of their cds, seems a bit crazy. anyone have the skinny?
a) don't do it if they ask for money
b) don't do it if they expect you to assign any rights for the song to them
I was immediately a bit skeptical looking at them 'cos I'm suspicious of anyone who claims to get compilations to major labels and that said labels listen to them but maybe these things do work in some circumstances.
Just be open to the possibility they might be scamming you for money and don't in any circumstances give them any for any fee whatsoever.
well, they asked for £25 and nothing more after that..i basically sent them a message saying i don't want to be rude but seriously what's in it for you guys? they said that they were salaried and employed as talent spotters for their clients, so they don't make cash off the compilations themselves.
so the most we will get scammed out of is £25, which could be worse. even so not sure if it's worth it..
That's established that then.
Basically it is, to a large extent, a scam. They might send these CDs out but ultimately their aim is to get £25 off you rather than get you signed.
you find no google entries for a guy claimed to be quite senior in Sony BMG's A & R. Which convinces me even further it's a scam - £25 from a lot of bands becomes a lot of money in no time. There's no reason why they'd need £25 per band to make a compilation album, no reason why clients would pay their salary but not pay the much smaller cost for CDs and I'd be amazed if the CDs even get sent to their "clients" (and if they do I'm sure they go straight in the slush pike).
Do NOT pay them any money. The fact it's a relatively small amount is precisely how they get away with it.
So what's in it for them? I'm sure it's not just a cut of whatever you might get from a major - how many bands are realistically going to be signed through a compilation like this?
So, they're going to ask you for money at some stage.
They put out several CDs a year, apparently. Find out which bands were on their previous CDs, email the bands, ask them what they thought of the label.
i asked them that, they're salaried apparently so they make nothing off the compilation
