This is pahetic
and you've got a big chunk of publicity for them both.
They've apologised, they took a joke too far...but SUSPENDED?
as brand is a team captain.
this is deplorable! They can't pull Buzzcocks this week, shirley!? :'(
just cutting out all the bits with Brand in.
I think I'd prefer that.
you so wrong
or are you having some kind of 'spouting incorrect statements' attack?
Funny how your comment has almost sparked as much uproar as this aforementioned story.
he just isn't very funny
Manda Rin is on this week
the identity parade. :-(
but will they screen it?
postponed "until further notice" apparently. :-(
and they show like all the mornings papers front pages and all that and pretty much all of them bar one had brand on the front and a massive headline. I mean come on is there any need for that?!?
Tomorrow night, 10.30pm.
*Also, this is so completely ridiculous. The Daily Mail brigade in this country are the most ignorant bunch of idiots alive. Where is Stuart Lee defending the case like when they turned on him?
Religious zealots did - the two aren't mutually exclusive, but they're not one and the same either. There's a slightly difference here as well since there was certainly some artistic merit to Lee and Thomas' piece that is arguably lacking in this case, whether you find it entertaining or not.
More to the point though, the mass media aren't going to give a shit what Stewart Lee thinks - he's not mainstream enough to be of interest to them. When this dies down into the media/arts sections of the papers then he might get asked, but until then he wouldn't get a voice.
didn't realise until after I clicked post though. Oops. xx
quite frankly. Unless you have no sense of perspective on current affairs, this type of attention (Blair and Cameron wading in etc) is ridiculous. It can't even be deemed a prank call, it wasn't malicious, just rude and ill-thought.
based on his last dvd
I mean surely this is all going to turn out to be a stunt for a new Chris Morris show or something.
Even Andrew Sachs, you know, the guy they upset, said it's all going a bit OTT
How is it pathetic - I'm totally with the 'appalled from the Daily Mail' types. What a cuntish thing to say on the radio. They should be sacked or fined as well with any luck
so it doesn't surprise me that you're 'outraged' - yes women aren't just there for subjectivity, fucking, wanking over or loathing, depending upon your standpoint/preferences.
It wasn't funny, and it was done by two quite unbearable twats.
Where did I say any of that? If it wasn't for the fact that you're clearly not all here I'd have a mind to take great offence at those insults
I personally find Andrew Sach's performance of Manuel to be very offensive and demand he be sacked from any job he has or has ever had or ever will have.
Or at least that's the impression I got walking around the place seeing ^that^ scrawled across many walls.
I'm not sure where or against who but surely the next step is we invade somewhere ?
They've been asking for it for years. The time has come.
for going on holiday.
Yes sack Amstell as well just for looking like someone deprived of oxygen.
which is why she's been talking about it to every bloody newspaper.
This thing is so far fetched it's comical. Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross upset Manuel from Fawlty Towers about shagging his granddaughter, and the nation erupts with fury
was so close to just being Brasseye - they were asking the opinion of a load of older women queuing up to see Alan Titchmarsh! Man alive.
I mean, really. Yeah Manuel out of Fawlty Towers got offended, fair. But it was ultimately a bit of a laugh. Christ.
don't you understand empathy?
When did you turn into such a penis?
I look forward to this post ending up somewhere where it'll make no sense.
at least Brand has subtlety at times. Way to ruin EVERYTHING.
so many retarded people on this website - not every woman is your mum or a hooker you know, serial killers
Whilst offending the disabled
They've elevated Brand to this position by allowing him to do -loads- of stuff like this on R2 already. His work is very very successful in pulling in listeners, and the Beeb has been reaping the rewards. Something like this was bound to happen: in fact, some similar stuff that's been done on there already has passed without the batting of an eyelid. The BBC should have either had the sense to reign him in a bit sooner, or have stood by him 100% following his apology.
yes people fuck people, people treat woman as something to stick their poisonous self obsessed angry cock into and then like to brag about it - this is just part of being a man sadly but to turn it into a puerile and ultimately non-funny 'scene' which will offend people who are older and less 'like do the math doofus' than 'us' is just pathetic.
Maybe I wasn't brought up by a golf widow and an ex-public school bully boy distant father - perhaps if I was i'd think it ok.
do you laugh like beavis and butthead by any chance?
I am an idiot please to shutting up thanking you very much.
I can't find any evidence of it...
followed by a trip round the Gladiators' set by his son.
I would never have know this were it not for the complainers. I now know an awful lot more about Andrew Sachs grand daughter than I did, and I think that Brand and Ross played only a very small part in relaying this info to me.....I had kind of deliberately not followed links toread up about it but after yesterday with Gordon and David weighing in i feklt that i had to find out if it was that important....imagine my dissappointment to find out that Ross hadnt just made up what he said to Mrs sachs, that Brand actually had gone out with her and she was a 'naughty dancer'
but that's ok, you carry on subjectifying women.
thanks to the fact that Ross claimed last year "I'm worth 1,000 BBC journalists!"
But really. They did something stupid. Fine. That's what the Beeb pays them for. The issue is they should have apologised sincerely as soon as they realised the offence they'd stirred up. Now it's too late, and all blown out of proportion thanks to the intervention of the Mail and others. I don't really have an answer, but a suspension seems reasonable.
Hopefully Ross's awful chat show will be cancelled and he'll focus on making geeky programmes about comics.
And Brand will disappear into the far reaches of satellite TV where I don't have to work so hard to avoid him.
Just how powerful are the right wing media in this country? I'm not going to dive into a debate I will admit I don't fully understand but this much I understand. Before the Mail on Sunday picked up on this there were 2 complaints. Now there are nearly 20,000. Thats a staggering amount and I'll go on record as saying most of them have not heard the recordings and only read selected highlights in the newspapers.
Sensing a moral outcry David Cameron jumps on the bandwagon knowing his demographic want public standards and decency cleaning up so we all live in a Mary Whitehouse dreamland. This means Ofcom and Gordon Brown get involved making the whole thing 10 times more serious than it needs to be and the pair get suspended.
They have apologised, it wasn't amazingly funny but nothing is taken out of context and scrutinised like this. They are both well known for being outrageous, if you don't like it don't listen. They weren't peddaling hate or demonising a minority so as far as I'm concerned they are fine by me.
if they get sacked for this i'm going to find every single pillock who complained several days after the event, knowing probably nothing about it, and heabutt them repeatedly for displaying complete hypocrisy.
the fact this country lets newspapers like the Sun and the Daily Mail make any kind of moral stand ever makes me sick, the immoral, disgusting, disgraceful institutions they are. yuck yuck yuck. this whole thing makes me ashamed to be English/British/whatever
make a slightly lewd prank phonecall. it was wrong, they apologised, then people who are looking for any excuse to decry the fact morality (a transient thing) moved on without their approval started kicking a fuss just because it gave their sad little lives some fucking meaning
i hate the new board.
i think you're taking this way out of proportion, but hey, i can't be fucked to argue with you
in the meantime, next time i want some moral guidance from you, i'll just shoot myself in the face instead. k?
Let's be honest, the BBC knew exactly what Russell Brand was like when they took him on, having been sacked from both MTV and XFM
And why was there no moral outrage from the nation, including you, when Jonathan Ross set up making plenty of jokes about Heather Mills who, like it or lump it, represents the disabled community? It's OK for him to slag her off for having a false leg, and nobody gives a fuck because she's a bitch, right?
People need to fucking relax about this. It's embarrassing
The dove speaks sense.
Well done Dove. My wife is of the 'disabled' origin what with having been born with one arm and watching Wossy week in week out on his show mocking a one legged lady (who does happen to be an odd one I must admit) and getting away with it but then being suspended for this latest shit......I mean, what's classed as 'wrong' these days?? The grand-daughter is going to get a hefty sum selling her story now so how pissed off is she really. It's all poop.
that they've encouraged over the past year by giving Brand better slots the more schoolboyishly he acts.
Part of the reason for Brand's success is that he sits on that precipice of nearly getting himself into trouble at every given opportunity.
cos his style of 'crossing lines humour' has made him popular, this time he missed, being egged on by Ross.
that the BBC shouldn't be run with the philosophy of giving the listening public more of the content that they actually want?
though, is in accepting that to have the good stuff - or the kind of good stuff which Brand does, which I think can be tremendously funny when it works - you're going to have missteps like this one. I mean, if you hate everything Brand does, then it's going to be hard to explain; but the appeal of it isn't (usually) in bullying as much as it is in sniggering-behind-the-back-of-your-hand, classroom-level stuff. If people agree to appear on the show, they're generally agreeing to have the piss taken out of them a bit, but they'll have free reign to give as good as they get; which is why this caused a problem. In the past, when he's left similar messages, people have called back the following week to throw it right back at him.
Basically, creaky's post below is right on the money.
but its what happens when a corporation tries to grasp popularity or cultdom, they are not good at it witness also emi and virgin with the sex pistols.
The BBC has always had a remit to produce socially challenging comedy, in this case it has gone wrong and it was a mistake, the BBC will naturally have problems expecting its managers an producers being able to distinguish sometimes, especially with comedians who regularly push the walls back, too fast, for sensible peoples comfort (Peter Cook, Chris Morris for example)
They knew brand was rude and cheeky and irreverent. he knows he is, he knows he oversteps bounds, he knows he goes to far, when i read his autobiog, there was one bit where you dont laugh, because you know he has gone too far, that he really has been bad, and nasty and not nice, although the upshot is more against him and he knows he sdeserves it.
He does something awful (in a small way) something not at all funny or clever or brave, and you can tell that he realises in hindsight that it is bad, but he is employed BECAUSE of his impulsive naughtyness.
The PUBLIC like him because of this. Which is why i would be more inclined to thinjk that Ross is more culpable, because Ross does have a family and daughters, so he should be bringing this perspective to bear.....Brand probably felt more free to act up with someone like Ross there cos its probably a reassurance to him he isn't going into wrong territory. He was obviously wrong.
No one but Andrew Sachs comes out of this smelling of roses
didn't contact Mr & Ms Sachs between recording and transmission to apologise and ask their permission for use. Whoever took that decision should be sacked - Ross & Brand are just doing what they're paid to do.
Apparently somebody from the BBC phoned him, asked whether he minded the messages being broadcast, and Sachs said something like "it was a very bad line, and I couldn't quite make out what he was saying"
Which could mean that he agreed to it, without having heard the actual messages. OR it could mean that he really couldn't hear what he was being asked, but some lacky at the BBC decided to take that as his consent anyway
I mean Ross and Brand are being the fall-guys here but someone took the decision to air it.
Sure, they behaved utterly twattishly but anyone who's ever seen Friday Night with Jonathan Ross broadcast knows he says fuckloads of stuff that can't be broadcast on the (reasonable) belief that the people employed to do compliance will ensure the edit's suitable for the public. That hasn't happened here.
This isn't to defend Ross's and Brand's actions. They acted like twats. But they're apologised and, from their end of things, that should be the end of it. Really the reason this is such an issue is 'cos it was broadcast - that's the really inappopriate part of this and wasn't Brand or Ross's decision.
there'd be several million complaints
it was the newspapers i was complaining about, rather than the readers per say
you can't complain can you?
perfect excuse for the beeb to slash some costs
Perhaps Brand and Ross will waiver enforcing payment, cos despite all the hysteria about them, i am sure they're not as actually cold hearted and callous as some bosses who insist on full payment for contract when dismissed
They're paid millions to act like pricks and we all do it for free.
Newpapers look hippocritical. BBC looks confused and doesnt know whats its doing.
Brown and Cameroon getting involved actually encouraged me to look up details and thus learn a lot more about Sach's grand daughter than i suspect he would wish to have happened.
Georgina Ballie to appear on TV more now.
they're both insufferably unfunny fuckwits. The less of them on TV/radio, the better.
The Sun is a dispicable right wing populist piece of hypocritical sh*t.
Anyone who buys it deserve to be an*ly raped with rolled up copies of the daily mail wrapped in barbed wire.
so for saying what you just said, I challenge you to a fight. I'm being 100% serious as well.
for the same reasons. plus breasts.
AT LEAST? I want to know what further punishment she is considering.
only 2 complained.
now theres over 10000 complaints but i wonder how many of those people have actually even listened to the show rather than just read the sun/daily mail and phoned in their complaint.
For the record i dont particularly like either man, but to sack them both seems absurd; they've just made a very poor and ill judged prank. If anyone's truly to blame its their editors for allowing it to go on air. I really hope this whole thing ends soon because its becoming laughable.
cos really for one of these murderers to even contemplate applying to have their sentence cut seems to me to suggest that they are not fully remorseful or aware of what they have done......surely to cut their sentence (even by a small amount) is something that the gov can comment upon, since it appoints judges and is responsible for handling of criminality (it is not responsible for broadcasting content or the media apparently)
Also it is interesting that this case seems to be getting almost as much air as shooting innocent brazillians on the underground, Brand and Ross being singled out as some of the most henious men in britain.....erm perhaps they made a mistake, perhaps like the police did with mr mendes, except with vastly different outcomes.
Surely a sense of perspective is needed?
is responsible for broadcasting, since it provides the licence.
It CERTAINLY is not responsible for the judiciary - a fundamental principle of our constitution.
I thought that the bbc was meant to try to be totally free from gov bias.
What you say is certainly what is claimed but surely what i say is also true and not necessarily in line with what is claimed? Although it is also not the gainsay.
Surely the gov is responsible for legislature? or is it just the legal reform people?
Im confused, I thought that the gov did traditionally debate crime and punishment in parliament, and how they think it should move.......whereas i thought that traditionally parliament was reluctant to talk about in which direction the beeb should move (other than discussing license fees)
who does appoint judges then? Dont judgtes decide on length of sentences? Isnt there political influence on sentencing also because of numbers of prison places etc?
Who came up with the idea of asbos? etc isnt that gov? or was it just the courts?
Im genuinely generally confused now
Judges are appointed by the Lord Chancellor (well, he tells the Queen who to appoint), who sits within the government's department for constitutional affairs. Judges may also consider political factors in sentencing. However, it is a long held principle that the legislature, i.e. parliament, and the judiciary must be separate. The government passes laws - the judiciary interprets those laws in line with what they believe parliament to have meant. However, parliament must not interfere with judgments and sentences though - that is the prerogative of the judiciary only. In fact, it is the judiciary who can comment and pass judgment on the legislature - it does not operate in reverse.
Due to BBC suspending Russell Brand, tomorrows Buzzcocks show is postponed until further notice.
What other outrages can we cause to minor sitcom characters from years ago?
Roger Lloyd Pack was he cornerstone of that show, and don't you forget it
A more suitably 'minor' character would be Michael the Barman, God rest his soul
Although stupid for not having taken a cue from Ross' book and apologising personally (which may have diffused the whole thing altogether).
Oh dear - LOLarama. I know a few people who must be very amused by this.
For God's sake. In other news; earthquake in Pakistan kills at least 160 people, an ongoing battle about assisted suicide goes to court and rate cut improves global economy.
Also, most importantly of all, Maradona gets made Argentina's coach.
SORT IT OUT BEEB. CHANNEL 5 ARE ON YOUR TAILS.
two of the best things on the BBC. maybe brand will have matt back on his show if he ever returns.
It WAS funny. Thats a fact. It WASN'T a "prank call". Brand DID fuck that mans granddaughter. It's not as if ross just shouted it out either, the whole point of having him on was because brand fucked his granddaughter.
I bet they've fallen out or something.
Matt stayed there to live with his new girlfriend. It has been nearly 2 months now though. Matt would never have let this happen.
I was always hoping trevor locke would come back, even after 2 months :(
BRING BACK MORGAN AND LOCKE (BUT ALSO BRAND TOO PLEASE)
it's hardly ruining her image if he tells her granddad she fucked a guy that looks like a goth.
that even with a humongous E4 budget he can't make the weeks most surreal satirical drama. It's him I feel truly sorry for.
is pretty much the worst thing ever.
The worst war of the last few decades looks as if it might be kicking off again and people are wasting breath and ink arguing about this total non-event.
It was childish at best. I'm sure Andrew Sachs can get offended on his own if he so wishes and doesn't need an army of moral mercenaries to do it for him. Christ.
it barely seems to be being touched by the news channels. Still, I suppose dead Africans are less important than Andrew Sachs being a bit upset.
this is the man who made his name re-enforcing racial stereotypes and being slapped around by john cleese.
Why can't the BBC stand up for themselves? What a bunch of cockends.
I agree they should be suspended but find the Daily Mail and the Sun disgustingly knee-jerk - John Harris wrote a good column about this yesterday in the Guardian. Really its ok not to be one of the other isn't it - 'liberal' but actually intolerant of loutish morons like Jonathan Ross - I just don't like his boorish manner and Brand is oversubscribed so seeing less of them the better. who cares how right wing the Mail is or how 'right on' the Amstells of the world are - scratch hard enough as this debate has and you see we all have prejudices.
Apart from Bannam who is fucking brilliant at EVERYTHING
It's only because journalists are so fed up with reporting on the economic state of the country. The media of Great Britian has latched on to something that in any other climate would be controversial, and has turned it into something completely over the top.
Apparently Sachs agreed to the BBC using the clips anyway so why all the fuss?
Double standards, BBC, double standards.
and I honestly thought nothing of it, other than that Jonathan Ross was an idiot. Why is this a massive deal? its really annoying me. honestly, this country! people should just calm down and get a grip. ooo license payers money. ooo old people etc etc
oh, you're a dick? oh, well, if you say so.
for their behaviour, branding the prank 'upsetting'".
JR: "Let's use up the rest of his tape, this time with a heartfelt and sincere apology... Pretend you're Gordon Brown and make a beautiful speech rescuing the country from the credit crunch and rescue him from the inner turmoil you've caused by saying that you jumped on a relative."
RB: "Yes, you're right Jonathan, you're right. Only by doing the exact thing that we've done three times already can we make the situation better."
I found this bit funny tho...
I had no idea any of this has been going on. What the fuck have I been doing to miss all this? I had a pizza yesterday, maybe that has something to do with it.
Did they catch the chap who killed the sex ladies in Ipswich? Was it a chap who did it?
George Aligayah: "I love eating Peaches."
