i was looking at the SurfTheChannel forums today and had a look at their rules. a lot of the rules they set are broken here daily, a few in particular stand out:
"5. Please refrain from using excessive or unnecessary foul language."
-there are no rules at all here, all language is acceptable and a post with a load of expletives in will not have an eyelid batted at.
"13. Personal attacks are prohibited. Commonly known as flaming, personal attacks are posts which are designed to personally berate or insult another member. Text of this nature is not beneficial to the community spirit and will not be tolerated."
-obviously it has been said that this kind of thing won't be stood for here but no-one really adheres to it, there is always a thread in the past five pages of the social board which is/contains a direct attack on someone (most recently i remember clicheguevara's one about hofo)
"15. Warnings and bans are not to be discussed on the forum. Such matters shall remain private between the moderator/admin and the user. Questions or comments concerning warnings and bans will be conveyed through private messaging. Likewise, discussions regarding moderator actions are not permitted on the forum."
-the end sentence of this in particular stood out to me. and the first part reminds me of when a thread was made simply stating "martbowski is banned." by the moderator who banned him.
and in a similar vein:
"16. Members questioning staff decisions regarding bans and/or warnings of other members shall receive a warning, and the second instance is a bannable offence. Likewise, making threads/posts in support of banned members shall be considered questioning staff decisions."
-well, this happens all the time.
i'm not complaining here at all, i much prefer how this is with more free speech and it feels more like home, plus it's how i'm used to DiS being. but do you think you would enjoy this site more if rules such as the ones above were instated? or if not those, would you like to see any other ones? obviously with the lack of moderators we have at the moment shit like that would never get adhered to but it would be interesting to see if we could survive with rules for like, a week. or even a day.
