I also worry about the 2 S Club ones, thats tapping into a weird demographic of people who fancied young girls but were also aware of the weirdness of it.
so for me it's alright :)
short haired one nice.
10000000 x less poptastic
i just said i find them attractive, innit.
theres no difference.
yeah some bands are successful for their music rather than appearance, but stuff like the saturdays etc. are sold on asthetic as much as anything else, and its no different whether they are male of female
and i think to an extent they are anyway, just male objectification tends to take a louder and more crude tone than the female equivalent
As I say below I think it is different but, in the Saturday's case, Wishpig's argument ("I'm sure they'd rather be known for their songs rather than their looks" )falls apart as soon as you watch the video, in which they're made-up and pouting at a camera in short skirts.
Whilst I actually symptahise with the point she's trying to make in general, a band like the Saturdays simply can't have it both ways. They can't trade off their looks and then complain when they get objectified. I admit, in an ideal world, it'd be better if they just didn't trade off their looks but, since that's what they're doing, that's what people are gonna talk about.
I mean when Wishpig says "it's not the fans fault directly, mroe like label bosses and advetising cretins" she's completely absolving the band themselves of all responsibility but they must have had the power to say "no" if they didn't want to do it with it and they have to ultimately take their own responsibility for the 'unhealthy attitude' they're projecting to their fans.
It seems to suggest that women are always the victims and, rather disturbingly, that they don't have independent minds of their own. Your argument only works if you assume women are delicate, fragile, passive creatures entirely at the mercy of far cleverer men who out-smart them and seek to manipulate them.
And I don't really believe that to be true, or a particularly healthy view to hold of women.
People in mainstream pop bands are there because of their attractiveness as much as their talent. Given they've already consciously decided to participate in a process in which they intend to succeed based upon being judged on their looks as well as their abilities, they can't really complain when they're judged on their looks.
looking fanciable is pretty much in their job description innit
pretty people sell stuff, ugly people wont.
which is the relevant point here that I think Wishpig overlooks.
Would I get in a boy band? Fuck no. I honestly don't think female pop stars of this nature are treated any differently than male pop stars of this nature - it's objectification of people and it's essentially a business of manufacturing and selling a fantasy to people that's not based on reality, probably fucks with people's self-esteem and turns the people involved pretty much into commodities BUT it's not a gender issue as it's in no way specific (or worse for) women.
That's not to say I think that's always the case. I got pretty pissed off when people went on about Lily Allen or Kate Nash being "ugly" simply 'cos they didn't conform to the model of "perfection" in terms of appearance that most pop stars had because they weren't really trading off their looks and a man in thier position would have been treated differently and wouldn't have been subjected to ridicule for looking less than perfect. That was a gender issue but this has nothing to do with gender at all.
I don't think your argument makes sense there.
but then again, if you went on about how you fancied them, people would think you were a bit weird, as they are robots after all.
she was taller than me.
she's an accomplished guitarist as well.
the one with the spiky brunette hair. if, i didn't know she had been in s club juniors. and, i didn't know she was only 19. and, i didn't see her on buzzcocks last week. but all that aside, in another world, i could take a shine to her.
i like mcfly and everything, tom seems alright. but dougie? dougie is a cunt
when the lead goes for the mic....she sort of pauses and has a little split second wait to decide....first time i thought it was because she was just choosing a colour...but then i realised they all have their names on each mic. poor girl has been whisked through the pop machine until she doesn't even know who she is anymore
Though having seen Buzzcocks last week - WOW, was that girl stupid. She should be careful not to sit still too long in case a doctor declares her medically braindead.
which pisses me off even more
i dont really fancy robots.
the one that sings a lot of the lead bits. she is the one i fancy most
Does it remind anyone else of Nu Flow by Big Brovaz?
"This is Big Bro, takin' over the show...."
That said, I quite like it.
but it's nowhere near as good a pop song as Nu Flow.
One of the upsides of the relatively scarcity of mainstream all-out "pop" acts in recent years is the quality control's been pretty high of those who do succeed. Girls Aloud, Justin Timberlake etc. have survived the cut by releasing great pop songs. Unless there's a swing back towards pop music, or the Saturdays raise their game, I can't see 'em doing the same.
i actually kinda like this song.
also frankie r the prettiest.
but her hair is shit. The blonde probably wins overall.
"I'd have sweet sweet delicate love with any one of them."
