I'd like it a lot more if it fucking worked a bit better.

it seems to take up a LOT of memory in the system (given how little it does) and it doesn't like Dungeons & Dragons: Tiny Adventures which is irritating.

  • they released it for linux yet, theo?

(yeah, i good just look it up....)

    • okay, so no

      silly mixed open source messages.

      toomanykooks @toomanykooks | 30 Sep '08, 13:49 | X
    • You good. I don't know the answer because I don't use linux.

It's Java based, though (I think) so presumably it could easily be converted. Likely it's targeted at a consumer with Windows, though.

      • just seems strange

that google is pushing open source things and well, they're staggering the release of chrome...

        ah well!

        toomanykooks @TheoGB | 30 Sep '08, 13:51 | X
      • No it's not!

The UI is coded in C++ and the core is written in Assembly!

It's a nightmare to port, hence the delay.

Additionally, is in an incredibly early beta stage (0.2 is the base revision I think right now) so chill out on it!

        crablin @TheoGB | 30 Sep '08, 14:29 | X
        • Fuck the 'chilling out'.

If they want to put someone's 20% time out there along with a 38 page comic explaining why you should use it, they should wait until it's free of some fairly basic bugs or else they'll accept criticism.

It has the potential to be excellent but right now it has nothing special to offer.

          TheoGB @crablin | 30 Sep '08, 15:18 | X
  • It's actually prone to hanging on this computer.

I'd like it to be better but as you say, it's not really showing why we should use it.

      • "No intrusive download manager; you see your download's status at the bottom of your current window"

That's why I hate Firefox. This sounds good to me.

Does it have an ad blocker?

        moker @moker | 30 Sep '08, 14:23 | X
        • No Ad blocker.

Opera doesn't have a download manager really either. And the transfer's window is great because you can access the right-click context menu from it.

        • the answer:

although you're not going to read this.

            thank you

    • it's great

apart from the constant hanging on my laptop back home. I use it all the time now at work, though. The combined search/address bar thing is amazing.

      fidel_catstro | 30 Sep '08, 14:25 | X
      • When I say 'hanging' I mean pauses. Lags.

Also that search in the bar thing works in Opera too. Actually in Opera (and I believe in Firefox) you can assign letters. So:

        g luminare
        would google for luminaire but
        a help
        would search Amazon for 'help'.

        TheoGB @fidel_catstro | 30 Sep '08, 14:28 | X
        • woah

might have to check that out.

And yes, hanging = lags here also. Mmm frustratingy.

          fidel_catstro @TheoGB | 30 Sep '08, 14:32 | X
    • It takes up less

than windows claims it is, due to the shared bit of memory (for the main bit of the program). That gets counted for every process launched.

I tend to find it uses about as much as Firefox tbh, although plenty more than Opera or IE.

      colinzealuk | 30 Sep '08, 14:29 | X
    • ...

It's actually replaced Firefox on my home computer, due to Firefox's unfortunate habit of rincing out 50% of my CPU regardless of what it happens to be doing.

Chrome by contrast doesn't seem to use any memory at all, even though for some reason Windows says there's always at least three instances of it running at any one time.

      Stealthy | 30 Sep '08, 15:23 | X
      • It's a puzzler. Opera is nice on CPU/Memory usage too, I find.

I have left Chrome alone for a while. Maybe this old work machine isn't cool enough for it. It *is* 6 years old...

        TheoGB @Stealthy | 30 Sep '08, 16:09 | X
        • ...

The thing of it, Firefox used to be fast, but this bug just randomly kicked in - at first without me noticing, which I don't need to tell you is the worst thing that can happen with a bug.

So I guess it's been mating with other bugs now because now within seconds of me loading up a FF browser, my (fairly powerful) PC is damn near crippled. And no matter what I try, nothing will fix it.

Crying shame, too. Chrome doesn't have any plug-ins yet.

          Stealthy @TheoGB | 30 Sep '08, 19:32 | X
    • It's okay

but its lacking the features of it's main 2 competitors which are actually useful! GRRRR

      Yesiamaduck | 30 Sep '08, 20:26 | X
    • I gave up on it

Too much hassle - I went to the one entry on IMDB twice before going looking anything else up on there, and it wouldn't learn anything else but that one thing every time I typed in 'i'. Idiotic.

Also, the address bar searching just doesn't work at all well - not a patch on Opera's, even if it does learn it. Wow, or something.

AND it also managed to predict what I wanted to go to after typing a few letters, which was great, but as soon as I pressed down to try to select it, it would go to something else. Fucking hell. Forcing me to use the mouse is not my idea of a good time.

      Arfie | 30 Sep '08, 21:29 | X
    • I've been using it

non-stop, exclusively since release day, on three different PCs. No crashes on any of them, it's fast and easy to use. The only thing I miss, really, is Mouse Gestures. Apart from that, I'm a Chrome convert.

      kovacs | 30 Sep '08, 22:05 | X
      • mouse gestures

are too good to do without.
