where should i go to university?
i've been pining about studying psychology at edinburgh ever since i travelled all the way to the open day, but my AS results weren't so good (BCCD). i've been told by my teachers that i could get AAB at the end of the year if i tried hard, but i suppose this is too late.
my biggest want would be a city with nice venues/places to go and people who would make me turn into more interesting person.
i'd really appreciate anything
THANKS

Brighton
i went to the sussex open day
there was a fat man jumping up and down on his bed saying how good it was.
i wasn't so keen
Hogwarts
Dundee
everyone else is wrong
I had AS results like yours and ended up with ABB.
Doing Psychology at Sheffield now.
ah rly?
this helps my esteem
was it predicted grades that helped?
I was predicted the grades I eventually got,
which was actually a grade lower than the uni wanted.
So I suppose yes, they did, even if they weren't the exact requirements.
i just looked up psychology at sheffield
it says requirements are AAB. was this the same when you applied?
it looks like the requirements are going up :(
Sometimes on results day
they let you in anyway if you're like a grade lower and you have a good personal statement etc. But don't rely on that, I did and I got to uni through clearing. Not necessarily a bad thing though.
Edge Hill
(LOL)
I don't really think as grades count for jack
since you don't even have to declare them. It's the predicted grades they go off, so as long as you can get your teachers to put that 'AAB' into writing Edinburgh's still on the cards.
You do have to declare them, for edinburgh
i was given an unconditional and I still had to send a scan of my certificate
:(
It depends
on something. I can't remember what. Something to do with if your AS levels are registered as qualifications in their own right.
no
they seriously don't look at as levels or take them into account. You probably only had to send them off because you do the Scottish equivalent to A-levels. Which is a completely different ball park.
But surely it's all done through UCAS anyway?
that doesn't make sense.
IT DEPENDS
I'm pretty sure I didn't even get AS certificates.
God knows
I just remember at the Glasgow open day people were asking about poor AS's and the staff we're pretty nonchalant about it. And that was for medicine.
Doesn't Scotland have the highest child obesity rates in Europe though?
i assume it's because they care more about the full a levels
(a2s?). universities here in scotland don't really take into account anything lower than highers anyway.
all colleges and unis (at least in scotland)
ask for you to send off a copy of your certificates.
I hate you
and your bloody display picture. I swear I click it every time yet I never fucking learn.
:D
i think most edinburgh courses only ask for BBB anyway
yeah but they're liars
i asked them about that and they said that if you don't have around AAB for your actual AS grades then there's no point applying.
i'm so over edinburgh anyway
Definitely Dundee or Huddersfield.
^ knows
did you go to dundee alex?
No, I went to Hull...the jewel of the East Coast Riviera!
ouch
I've never been to Hell and I don't think I ever want to go.
what's good about dundee?
i'm listening
Don't go to fucking Dundee
shut it, irishman
sheffield
'cos i will be there and we can look alike together.

hi
yeah i heard about it, and most likely will. thanks :)
:D
we could do that thing where one of us says to our friends "i'm hungry, i'll be back with some breakfast" while disappearing down a hallway and the other emerging from a bush with soup and a roll.
that would be
HIALRIOUS
HILARIOUS*
don't go to Edinburgh then
GLASGOW
i've always wanted to go
i'm a bit nervous about the crime i keep hearing about it though. i suppose it's like london though with dodgy and not dodgy areas?
sorry, i tried to make this sound as little middle class as possible but it hasn't worked.
glasgow is actually fine
hmm, there are dodgy areas, some (hiya easterhouse!) more than others (hiya partick!). all in all, it gets overestimated.
Uni is in the west end, lovely area...
I encountered more trouble while shopping in READING this afternoon that I have during my two years of Glasgow...
And it's a great place to be.
lame bump:
i have to get my application off by the end of this week but i'm having real trouble with a 5th choice.
here's what i have so far:
1.Glasgow
2.Goldsmiths
3.Strathclyde
4.Aberdeen
i'm thinking maybe to apply to glasgow twice or try manchester/leeds something like that.
i haven't been to any of the universities apart from goldsmiths. is aberdeen crap?
aberdeen is crap
i'd put a double in for glasgow
i think i just might
put manchester
You've applied to Scotland 3 times
Clearly you're not cut out for uni.
you don't know what it's like to live in surrey
there's not much point in applying to glasgow twice
cos you're admitted into the faculty, not the subject area, so unless you're applying for courses with radically different grade requirements i'm pretty sure it won't make much difference to your chances
that said, if there's nowhere else you're keen on then i guess it won't do any harm. glasgow is fantastic, definitely the best option if you're going for scotland. aberdeen is okay but it's miles from anywhere and there's not a whole lot going on
i think it's a bit strange though if the subject is psychology?
i'm thinking to apply to both the arts and science faculties because it said on the website that you if you do psychology, you have a choice of three faculties to apply within.
surely if you apply to two separate faculties then the application will be considered by different people?
but yeah i've heard ace things about the glasgow music scene and people.
oh yeah, psychology has a slightly different system, i think
at least, i know that you can only do psychology if you've applied for it directly (as opposed to other subjects where you pretty much have free choice once you've been accepted) because of high demand. or something. so yeah, it's probably worth trying twice.
i moved to glasgow from edinburgh and it's almost definitely superior as a city. as has been said, a lot of it is sadly going to depend on the luck of the people you end up with, but it's a brilliant place.
i'm massively confused.
i want to do the thing where you can have a choice to do whatever. if the demand is high for psychology compared to not so high for an english lit/philosophy/music mix up (which i would prefer anyway) then i would want to do that. it's really likely that i would be beaten to a place for psychology by a straight A student.
i don't know how i would apply to faculty normally because my whole personal statement is all about why i like psychology.
balls.
sheffield
srsly.
yes
UC Helmand
Porno Production with Applied Brewing (Joint Hons)
dundee
not abertay though, that's where thick people go
ohhh reading fail
dundee instead of aberdeen?
but aberdeen has that moshulu venue
Er... atbay?
cardiff
srsly
i think my grades are a grade or two off :(
aww :(
i don't think they cared about my grades at all, they probably just wanted my norwegian money. but i can live with that.
does it take a long time to become norwegian?
a few years, i'm afraid
ah
:(
three years I spent at cardiff uni were hell
i think i vaguely remember talking to you about this before.
or it was someone else who hated cardiff. i did hate last year to be fair, like i said in the other uni thread just now i wasn't even sure about coming back after the summer, but i'm so glad i did now as i'm completely falling in love with the place.
the shitty thing is that it depends so much
on the people you're randomly thrown together with.
There's someone in my class who went to Cardiff
and left cos it was so awful apprently.
do you know what course they were doing?
its was supposed to have the highest graduate satisfaction level
of any uni the year I left. It wasnt really cardiffs fault it is a great place, im just a socially inept loser who would hate it anywhere
Sheffield has the highest chicks:chaps ratio.
incorrect
Innit
Everyone knows that's Nottingham. Even though every year, everyone gets told "The boy:girl ratio is like 5 to 1!!!!!!!!!" and all the boys apply and no girls apply, *somehow* it's always the same.
if your parents are rich, go to london.
if not, go to leeds or manchester.
they're basically the three cities where stuff happens and where people who aren't all really boring go.
don't Zapsta & Brusma both study in London?
you're so out of the loop
zapsta's at bristol and brusma has already passed his degree.
i really want to apply to manchester and leeds but i really need a safety net
cue Dunloldee and Ablolerdeen
:(
do manchester or leeds have a good lesser university?
Manchester Met
Leeds Met.
Paisley
Seriously though, don't go to Paisley
London.
*think about it*
Goldsmiths
I'm so glad i came here.
i like how much loyalty is inspires in its alumni
Sheffield
is ace. Good students union, plenty of gigs, friendly people and if you are very lucky you might see Jarvis Cocker walking around.
Very hilly though, hills are a pain in the ass.
I live in Sheffield
it's a good city to go to uni too. I got the exact same grades as you, and have made Leicester my first choice with Nottingham my insurance for Law.
go to an industrial northern city
manchester, liverpool, sheffield. you'll have more fun than you would in brighton or bristol or warwick or some other shit
Go to Bristol,
lots of friendly people, plenty of gigs going on and it feels big enough for there to be plenty going on but it's not overwhelmingly large either. Only downside is there are a lot of stupid posh people about, but they're easily avoided.
What he/she said ^
if you have your heart set on edinburgh
why not apply there as well, just in case?
i don't really have my heart set on it as much anymore
i travelled around a bit and found other places that were just as good.
but edinburgh is totally the best
*may or may not study there*
