thriving or diving?
diving big time
it's pretty good.
although it used to be thriving. Average attendace on Friday/Saturday nights would generally be 125-330 (which is maximum capacity). The best thing about it was the fact that the same people would turn up for Capdown on the Friday, then you'd see them the following week for Sikth, then the week after the acoustic nights. Since the growth in popularity of Myspace it's only the 'cool' bands that people seem to bother to go and see. The local scene is really struggling, and the number of decent bands in the area has rapidly declined.
it's not diving.
its just meh.
Diving in terms of quality.
I like folk and love raga.
or Soul bands.
Could be wurs.
in the sort of lots of bands who play the same stuff, play gigs where most of their friends turn up, bands get a bit of a following and bugger off to another city, if you have a song in the charts than you'll get more than ten people show up sort of way.
best. citeh. eva.
The best venue closed down a few months ago. Have some good artists either from the area or playing the area a lot but not enough; Tim and Sam, The Hungry I, Katie Malco, My First Tooth, TANAOU and others.
they were awful the one and only time I've seen them.
The Agonal Trace ftw!
we have to really, what else do we have?
I've been muttering that to myself every time I've seen a local band play live.
"It's okay Jack, Thom Yorke was born near here... It's okay Jack, Thom Yorke was born near here... It's okay Jack, Thom Yorke was born near here... It's okay Jack, Thom Yorke was born near here... It's okay Jack, Thom Yorke was born near here... "
you listened to katie then. i'll tell her that someone other than me mentioned her on here, she'll be dead chuffed!
there haven't really been any good local bands in Northampton for a couple of years. but at least we're starting to get some decent gigs.
Very good indeed, probably my favourite of what was recommended to me on here. She's in my myspazz top friends now too, which is an honour in itself ;)
i am going to see the wave pictures/jeffrey lewis with her tonight so shall pass this on.
Closest good venue to me is Club 85 and that usually has something worth seeing every so often. Esquires had a load of good bands recently, all of which I failed to attend because I'm a dick.
The scene in my town consists of pub rock bands covering 'Sweet Home Alabama' or 'Sweet Child Of Mine.' :S
Got anything else coming up?
but that's at The Phoenix. Still, it should be awesome, it's on Saturday 20th September and costs a mere £4. Roofs will be blown off.
Are they CRAINE side projects?
a few good small promotors putting on good gigs. I always feel Manchester used to be better than it is though.
I move to Dundee on Sunday though and I have very little idea of what it's going to be like, anyone know?
Not that it matters, but bleaurgh.
it used to be teaming with young metal bands but apart from that I'm not too sure what's going on
here i am, stuck in the middle with no fucking car to get to either.
there seem to be some good bands around cambridge at the moment. Puncture Repair Kit are good, and...uhh, i heard some others i liked. Tupolev Ghost are good, Mono Effect are good. There's also a lot of godawful earnest 'rock' bands that people seem to froth over. I dunno.
Cardiff - complacent. Boring. For a capital city with so, so many students it's got a horrifically small amount of decent bands. But nobody goes to gigs, so it's an all round massive disappointment.
all the student bands in bath were pretty awful or at least they were back when i lived there.
Norwich actually has a hardcore scene, so its alright.
so fairly decent.
it's good, no?
whilst there aren't that many good, new local bands, i definitley feel like there's been more stuff happening in the last 6 months or so.
and i should probably say craine, because it'll get a laugh.
quite a few good local rock and alternative metal acts and quite a few decent out of town bands have played there and the gigs get an alright turnout, The Mirimar Disaster gig last friday was pretty empty though.
Bad. No one ever plays here any more. The only significant venue in town is stuck on a loop of tribute bands and Battles of the Bandses.
I think this is a town people tend to leave before they do anything ineresting.
I should move.
In a word: bad.
I went to the Pioneer once. NEVER again. The Horn has had a few good gigs on but they're so ridiculously overpriced it's hardly worth it.
The Horn used to have a decent band on now and then. But now they're all about the tribute bands.
They're talking about booking some very decent bands later on this year. Hitchin is a but of a nightmare to get to from St Albans but Club 85 is a really good venue, probably one of the best small venues I've been to in England.
Hitchin is indeed a bitch to get to. But I'll keep an eye on the Green Room.
AND TORE THAT PLACE UP?
sooo diving really, lots of bands all sounding the same all likely lads.
Stop being so lazy!
are pretty lame from what I have heard. The venues only get good gigs on randomly and when someone acctual good is on there is usualy only 6 people there. The clubs suck balls for the most part as the big money spinning cheap booze and chav market has taken over big time and that leaves the acctual club nights that play music to scramble around in places with no late licences and shit like that.
alot of local bands are doing well that getting known natonaly
the chapman famly
billy the kid
there are a few who are on the verge of getting nationly know such as be qiuet shout loud and Suzane Elibeth Marrion
L.A has finally got some decent bands coming out of it.
No Age, The Mae Shi, HEALTH, Le Switch, The Henry Clay People.
the answer is obviously thriving!
buts? I LIEK BIG BUTS AND I CANT DENY
the bigger the country, the more shit music.
once, someone played bongos as well
we had a good run
There's way too many average 'emo' bands, and a lot of terrible 'indie' bands. I've perhaps seen 2 or 3 local bands I actually enjoyed in the last few years.
Theres one promoter trying to put the odd thing on. they put Johnny Foriegner on to a crowd of about 10. Theres a couple of others promoters but they're so genre specific it's not even funny.
I miss the old days when clubwithnoname used to put on loads of great stuff. Took that for granted a bit.
a few decent gigs pop up every now and then, a few decent bands .... although nobody seems to bother going to gigs that don't involve their friends in some way, which sucks .... i saw modey lemon on sunday night, who were fucking great, with just ten people in the audience .... luckily it's only 45 minutes to manchester, birmingham, nottingham and sheffield
I'm at Keele, so gig in Stoke a lot. I think it's pretty good. I've been to plenty of great stuff in the last year.
It annoys me there are no trains home from Birmingham or Manchester though.
the bandstand in hanley had just started to put on some interesting stuff before it shut down .... major blow .... and the glebe will have gone too before the end of the year so there ain't many more places left .... harry's bar, just up the road from the glebe, seems to have taken over alot of the gigs but i fuckin' hate that place ....
Manatees, Held by Hands etc
I didn't know the glebe was closing, Any reason why? I quite liked it as a small venue.
Can't say i've ever been to harry's bar.
I'll take stoke 'scene' any day over my hometown, anyway...
for 'government purposes' .... tho there is a big 'for sale' sign outside at the mo, so it's all a bit odd ....
thats a shame then.
diving, but it's never been particularly good, which is strange as its a big town.
plenty going on. how original or good it is could be up for debate, but there's certainly plenty of it.
there are a few good bands but turnout at gigs always seems pretty poor. i don't know how that compares to other places though.
There's good stuff around, but you have to know where to look. There'a local promoter who's started putting on some great gigs (James Blackshaw and Acid Mothers Temple coming up).
There's always the Rephlex records nights as well which are alright if you want to see Aphex Twin every other month...
