how long did it take before you stopped sounding rubbish and could generally pass at being able to play simple chords?
you always get better, and what you could do before always seems rubbish in comparison.
how quickly you develop depends on how often you play. i wouldnt recommend it if you dont enjoy doing it, but if you, just pick it up for half an hour every day. dont worry if you're not 'learning' anything, just get used to handling it and being comfortable with it, and then what you do know (basic chords for example) will start sounding much better.
and i fiddled about with it for about an hour.ive got a lot of fiddling to do!
really it took about 6 months before I actually sounded like I could play the guitar. That's from having never touched a guitar before to being able to play The Riverboat song by Ocean Colour Scene all the way through (inc. guitar solo). What can I say, it was a popular song at the time and was tabbed out in a guitar magazine.
well only the obvious bit.not the solo.i had lessons when i was about 11 and the two bits of songs i learnt were the riverboat song and that fleetwood mac song that is used for formula 1
is 'The Chain' off Rumours. 'tis a very good bass line and a guitar shop classic
I never learned chords or anything, I just listened to loads of songs I liked and attempted to learn them.
I learned using the tab book for The Bends.
It took me much longer to be able to jam with other people well and stop sounding like a 99th rate Jonny Greenwood.
you just have to get past the stage where your girlish fingertips weep at the sight of a string. After that it's plain sailing
i could only play G.
i learned by playing R.E.M. tabs from the internets.
the thing is, 8 years on, i can pretty much play every R.E.M. song, a few Radiohead, and fuck all else.
my english is appalling
and this battered old japanese les paul copy i bought for £40 and got fixed up. It sounds even "raw"er than a les paul should and it's fucking cool.
