CERN & the LHC baby!
Fascinating and mostly whizzing right over the top of my liberal arts educated head
brian cox is pretty good at explaining the theories, and they filmed it really nicely. I like vaguely knowing what a higgs boson is and why it's important.
something along the lines of:
"Anyone who thinks that the Large Hadron Collider will destroy the world is a twat"
that's the guy.
watch his speech on TED,it's ace
watch this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00dccnr/
longer but better
i can't watch it,cos i'm not in the UK.
I'm pretty sure I met him once at some conference I went to.
its well interesting even if alot of it goes over my tiney little mind.
about the new LHC, and another called Lost Horizons about the history of particle physics.
I cant watch BBC4
I always end up arguing with the TV, even though its more intelligent and coherent than I could dream of being
Wey! One unintended amusement about this LHC deal is that there are actually scientists getting really uptight about people thinking it's going to destroy the universe and calling a Doomsday Machine and stuff.
I LIKE that name.
Are you not shit scared about this?
There are things that science just should never mess with. Genetic engineering of animals, trying to recreate the virtual end of the earth, pissing around on Mars.
Really. I know that we're an intelligent species but some stuff you just really don't fucking need to know. How it got funded as a multi billion pound project is really beyond me.
they're not trying to recreate the end of the earth, just the start of the universe. And because the people involved who know more about it than you or me think that there's no basis for any conceivable threat. And because life would be a whole lot shitter if science was only about discovering what we NEED to know.
Personally I'd like to see a world where people can just tell other people what they can and can not do on subjects they have no qualifications about.
I read five of those comments and I am now hoping it will wipe out the Earth.
'How dare these pro science people threaten this beautiful planet with death!
keith Bentham, Wigan, uk'
ARE YOU NOT AWARE EVERYTHING IS SCIENCE?
"Stop and think before u do it!"
like the whole thing is a load of scientists coming back from the pub steaming drunk and starting to mess around in the lab
and "pissing around" on Mars?
I guess you have no reservations about using medicine that comes from genetically engineering animals.
leave mirri alone! she is just ignorant about the complexities of the subject, certainly not stupid.
This phrase "Recreating the birth of the universe" is very misleading.
They're actually trying to recreate conditions a few microseconds AFTER the birth of the universe. At this time, the universe was very very small and very very dense, so the average energy of a particle was much much higher than it is now. That's what we're aiming for. Making particles get up to these energies, and then SMACKING them together. Then we can see what kings of interactions were going on a few microseconds after the big bang.
It's impossible to 'create new universes' or any of that jazz, because we just don't know what that even means!
is that the only reason we think Higgs Boson may have existed is because without it our sums and theories don't really work. So there is a chance that this whole experiment could show us nothing other than that we've been barking up the wrong tree.
If they can't find the Higgs boson then the Standard Model of particle physics is wrong.
