Brighton is very good for gigs and venues. The largest is the Brighton Centre which has the larger, mainstream bands (Clunt's there next year *shudder*) but Green Day played there recently and I'm seeing Franz Ferdinand there on their tour. Concorde 2 is where you'll find the majority of the indie bands liked here. Art Brut, Devendra Banhart and THE FALL (!) are playing there soon. Then I know of the Engine Rooms - it's a dive though apparently - where Editors played and Komakino and Battle just were. I know of a place called Freebutt as well where The Decemberists are playing as well. Hope it helps.
Brighton gets loads of good shit i want to go to actually... a lot of nice electronica/noise bands play there together but not on the same bills in london.
Bristols pretty good for gigs. go to www.bristolticketshop.co.uk for some listings but it also gives a good idea of the number of venues there. I've been to see some great bands in Bristol. Also decent venues - Louisiana, Bierkeller. Decent rock pubs - the Eclipse and Hatchet. From my visits to Bristol I'd recommend it. Maybe a little pricey - drinks. And housing cost I think is above average but not crippling.
it's actually for me-i'm thinking of doing a second degree!! it's slightly mad, cos it's so expensive, but i'm thinkin this is the best yr to do it, before tuition fees go up. what does your brother do? and does he know if the teaching is generally good there? or is it more leave it to your own devices?
i've visited and it is a very nice place- just mainly worried abt cost etc, and if it's worth it in the end.
I don't go to uni in Bristol, my parents did back in the day... but still:
Bristol really is great for gigs, but the uni is out on the clifton side of bristol, and the real growing arts and gigs area at the moment is out on the stokes croft side.. but it's still walkable. See this little place: Things From Here
There's a big interest in the nu-folk stuff... the Venn festival was held a couple of months ago, with devendra banhart and oneida and lots of other experimental/noisy/folky acts. It's true there are loads and loads of venues.. even one on a boat!
Of course, Bristol is in the heart of Cider country, and everyone likes cider. Again, clifton where the uni is is the more expensive end of the place, although has some nice Brunel architecture and the downs for open space.. I guess if you decide to go with shared housing instead of halls, you could live in less of a swanky area and save some money.
Bristol is a great place.. ignore the broadmead centre, and visit stokes croft, gloucester road, harbourside and the park street/park row area.

This link is good for all the bands playing in Brighton soon. Elsewhere in Sussex, it's anyone's guess! I know Keane live here!
Re: Bristol Uni
That list is immense. Almost as good as London. YAY!
Re: Bristol Uni
Damn, i can't go. This feels like that Black Dice show all over again.
Re: Bristol Uni
Haha, Bristol kinda got dodged didn't it? Um, my uncle lives there if that helps.
