Camera lens questions

Marlvrum [Edit] [Delete] 11 replies 20:12, 24 August '08

I really don't know much about lenses. Is there much difference between a 50mm F 1.7 and a 50mm F 2? If so, what is it? Which is better? What does the F number actually mean? Help plz!

xxxxxxx

  • There will be little difference...

    between a 1.7 and 2 F-stop.

The F number means the Aperture, which controls the Depth of Field (You know, what's in focus) of the photo.

Soooo... a 1.7 and 2 are both very low Aperture numbers, meaning you will be capable of getting a narrow, sexy Depth of Field on both.

    SO THERE!!! :)

    • THANK YOU!

Sooo....the 1.7 would be a little bit better than the 2 if i'm wanting to get sexy depth of field, correct? Is there a downside to the 1.7?

I'VE CAUGHT YOU NOW - ANSWER ALL MA QUESTIONS!

      • Ja, the 1.7 would be a shade betterer...

but there will be little difference. Are we talking Canon here??? What are you using it for?
I love being a camera geek... soooo, am I, like, your lens bitch now?

Suppose only downside being if you used 1.7 ALL the time the photos may appear 'soft' as depth of field will be reeeeally narrow. But generally that's a good thang!

    • wuh?

the depth of field is determined by the aperture, for sure.
the main difference is that the 1.7 will let more light through the lens in comparison to the 2.
it's a nominal amount though - anything more than say, a thirty pound difference, isn't really worth it.

nice diagram to show how much light is being let through: http://tinyurl.com/aperturedis

      • so is one better than the other?

        Is more light better?

        • (i'm a n00b)

          Marlvrum @Marlvrum | 24 Aug '08, 20:41 | X
        • Yeah, 1.7 a TINY bit better...

          depends how much you're spending

          • goddamn it :[

i missed out on a 1.7 on ebay at the last minute. This always happens to me :[ !!!!

          • Also, i'm about to fire you a detailed camera related PM

            Be prepared!

        • say for example,

you could achieve the same picture with lens A on a one second shutter speed that you could with lens B on a 1/100 second shutter speed.

          - lens B is faster
          - lens B's image wouldn't be affected by as much blur (it's fucking hard to hold exactly still for a second)
          - lens B's aperture would be larger (aperture = the hole in the lens that lets in light - the lower the number, the more light is let in)
          - i'm not great at describing things.
          - 1.7 is a larger aperture than 2, so naturally will be a little better (assuming you'll be taking pictures at low-light gigs), but the difference wouldn't be massive.

          • thank you :)

I don't really know much about shutter speeds or anything, but that does make some sense, ha!
