computer help please....

commandercool [Edit] [Delete] 13 replies 12:22, 9 August '05
i think my home computer has some sort of virus or something. when i load it up, as soon as windows starts everything runs really slow. when i pressed ctrl+alt+del it said there were loads of programs called <unknown > running and then it comes up with loads of error messages.

because of this, i can't open my virus checker or anything else for that matter.

anyone got any advice?

try starting it up in 'safe mode'. It only loads the neccessary stuff and you should be able to do more to get rid

        1. restart the computer
        2. wait till just before it says 'starting windows' (or similar)
        3. press either 'F8' or 'CTRL' loads of times and eventually it will give you a menu of options.

I can never renember how to get into safe mode but turn on your computer and then bash all the F keys normaly does the trick and will bring up the safe mode options.

I never bother trying to rescue my computer when it starts fucking up.Formatting the drive and reinstalling Windows does the trick(although a pain in the arse)

i have loads of stuff on there i want to rescue, such as pictures, music, my cv etc that's not backed up, so formatting is last resort for me i'm afraid

Yeah i see what you mean.It is easier for me to just wipe the drive because i have two hard drives and just copy all essential files over to the second drive before format.

If you havent already go to download.com and get:

    AVG anti virus
    Zonealarm Firewall
    Ad-aware
    and spybot

Together they sort most things out and are all free.

As Marco says, boot it up in safe mode. You should then be able to back up the files you want to save to CD or floppy - then you can re-install windows if it comes to it

Also Spywareblaster does a fair job of preventing spyware.Use it with Spybot/Adaware which removes existing spyware.
