    • If you're going to start worrying about terrorists

why bother doing anything here? You can't let fear stop you.

The cost is problematic though I agree, no-one wants to be another Montreal.

      • I love the Olympics

so not not sick of it. It'll be over in three weeks anyway. Whereas I have to put up with people drivelling on about Big Brother and X Factor for most of the year these days. Of course the 2012 fuss will start from then, but again I don't mind too much. The World Cup and the Olympics are the greatest sporting events around.

        charliepanayi | 2 Aug '08, 14:28 | X
      • It'll be flawless or an utter fuck-up, time will tell.

The Football World Cup in South Africa, that will be a total disaster.

        Alex-in-Ciderland | 2 Aug '08, 15:13 | X
        • Different scale and at the risk of accusations of......

'racism', cricket is a white man's game in SA, the event was arranged with minimum interference/involvement from the fucking incompetent and near wholly corrupt ANC government.

The Football World Cup will be a very different beast.

          • i agree with Alex

            yeah, i know

        • it's the pinnacle

of most athletes' careers and billions of people watch it. Why wouldn't the media make a big deal out of it?

And I love all the analysis to be honest. The Colin Jackson programme on the other day was ace.

          • thats

the worst reason for doing something ive ever heard.

its like saying the media should fawn over pop factor the quakening because its the pinnacle of some trouts lives and millions up and down the country will send their single to the top of the christmas charts.

cant really comment because i didnt watch it. i caught five secs and it made me snooze.
            'well...i had a yohgut in the morning....then a coffee...then some sweeties....then another coffee...then some salad...another coffee....then some nuts...another coffee...'

im sure the rest was riveting.

            • Comparing to the Olympics and an athlete

to X-Factor and some moronic deluded fool who think they can sing.

              Yeah that makes sense

              charliepanayi @michael_w | 2 Aug '08, 16:14 | X
              • does really?

whats the difference, you value sports over music and entertainment?

                fucktherave @charliepanayi | 2 Aug '08, 17:00 | X
                • I value the Olympics

over a shitty reality show yeah.

                  charliepanayi @fucktherave | 2 Aug '08, 20:51 | X
                  • x-factor

                    probably has more integrity

        • Just the prospect

of Wiggins, Pendleton and co smashing the Aussie track cycling team has got me waiting with huge anticipation.

It's a couple of weeks of being guaranteed that there'll be something worth watching on the telly.

          • heres a better idea

watch fx on mondays at nine for the next eight weeks.

        • It's like Berlin, 1936, all over again

Time to pretend we're ok with brutal authoritarian regimes in the name of athletics!

        • I assume you either didn't make the team or failed a drugs test and are banned.

Either way, sounds like sour grapes to me.

        • I will be ignoring it as much as possible

I really don't give a shit if someone from one country can run faster or jump higher or throw a stick better than someone from another country.

          It bores my eyes off.

        • I dont understand why they keep banging on about ways they are combating drug use

why dont they just always test every medal winner then it would make it pointless

          ThingsThatFly | 3 Aug '08, 00:06 | X
        • well, the Olympics is great

A friend of mine will hopefully win a gold as this will be her last Olympics and she's in pretty good form - should win a medal anyway

as for the whole China thing... the propaganda mill is already rolling and I kind of agree with the comment comparing it to 1936

besides, she's actually a friend of my girlfriend really rather than a friend of mine

              • She's the only Swedish athlete I know

I raced Jamie Baulch over 400 metres once. And thewarn, but that's a different story.

            for the China thing.
This made me wonder, can we say the Olympics is a good thing* but the politicians who run it have/do drop the ball quite a bit?
*A good thing provided you don't hate sport naturally.

            soodoughnim @Anschul | 3 Aug '08, 00:30 | X
            • it's not just polticians though

              • Good point

The complicity of the media is worrying. They face the problem that in criticising they will likely be hampered or prevented from covering the games; lost revenue ahoy! (commercial view)
Then again if they take the official line they have no real integrity but they will be allowed in the country!

                soodoughnim @Anschul | 3 Aug '08, 00:40 | X
        • NOT JUST the next four years

but also the four years after that
and the four years after that
and the four years after that
and the four years after that
and the four years after that
