Now, I don't post much on DiS, and I haven't been here as long as many other DiSsers, but having read Mirri's leaving thread, and the 'Rape and Abortion' thread, there are a few observations I'd like to put forward.
Most of what's said on here is done in good humour, if not always good taste. However, in recent days/weeks the "shock factor" seems to have become more and more prevalent - I'm not entirely sure why this is, whether it's for "100 replies!" or causing amusement to some, but discomfort to others.
Equally, in the attempts to "bring the lolz" and get ":D" and "^This + comedy response" there seems to be no limits, and people will push and push to be the most outrageous. There has been little that has offended me personally on DiS, in fact, the thing that I find most unsettling, almost, is that everyone here is so volatile, and even though it is "teh internetz" behind every username on here is a real person, which i think is sometimes forgotten when people disagree with points raised. Animosity seems to be rife on the boards these days.
I understand Mirri's viewpoint, but having not been in the position, I couldn't comment on how upsetting I'd find it to have jokes made about it. Of course there are things that I do find troubling due to past experience, but I suck it up and move on.
I also appreciate the neccessity of humour to cope with unpleasant events - it is a kneejerk reaction sometimes to come out with a quip that may not always be in good taste but that's life.
There's nobody on these boards I "DiSlike" and you do make me giggle, but perhaps it's time for a bit of reassassment regarding what is appropriate and inappropriate to say, when you take into consideration the effect it may have on other members.
Hope I haven't spoken out of turn.
