and McSweeney's is a pseuds' recycling bin of smug signifiers and Creative Writing lecturers.
but it soon got boring.
at the moment, and agree completely. it's written well, but there's nothing that grabs me and particularly makes me want to pick it up every minute i have free.
mcsweeneys is amazing though.
collated the second best collection of short stories I've ever read. I think someone once said about Lightning Bolt: if you can listen to a Lightning Bolt album without wanting to pick up and instrument, there's something wrong with you.
If you can read this:
without wanting to pick up a pen, there's something wrong with you.
it's more him on his own, and the general tone of McSweeney's the website, that irks me (exaggerated for effect in the opening post, obv).
the editorial bits and stuff attributed to mcsweeneys in general is fairly cringe-inducing. but the stuff by the actual writers is good. if that makes sense. *re-reads post*
that doesn't make sense.
Eggers himself isn't a favourite of mine, but McSweeney's itself has an awesome, awesome stable of writiers..
He can write beautifully, and is undoubtedly a very clever guy but reading his work is like seeing a hyperactive child running around and shouting "LOOK HOW GREAT I AM. LOOK AT ME, I'M SO CLEVER! WOW, I'M SO AMAZING!"
and deserves the acclaim, I don't think he has come close to being as good with anything else. I've only dabbled with mcsweeneys collections but do enjoy the believer and think it is good they exist.
the lists kill me every time.
killed me yesterday. i'm a ghost, you see.
until I realised that all I ever got out of it was a mild grin and a bit of a chuckle - and that was overwhelmed by the feeling that I was in a creative writing group session, being shown off at by some clever but crucially inept postgrads.
The '4-year old' series were genuinely brilliant, though.
is it "how we are hungry"? Is pretty good, I think. Velocity didn't grab me at all. MAybe tis an attention span thing?
just ordered the July/August issue, it's music themed with a free CD (tracklisting below), and Haruki Murakami writing about jazz.
