Are they really that important?

you can find it out easily enough, in fact so can your employers... is the a point to them?
I'd say that because its an important number, they give it you in a format you're likely to keep safer than a piece of paper. Mine's in my room somewhere.

paper can be kept in cork boards and in filing cabinets and folded up into a tiny block of paper and shoved into a bookcase.
Cards get lumped in with all those silly things like Nectar cards and swis army cards.
but in card form.
just write the number down.
