MY WINNIPEG winds its way though the birthplace of personal mythologies and attempts to understand the nature of memory. Equal parts mystical rumination and personal history, city chronicle and deranged post-Freudian proletarian fantasy, Guy Maddin’s latest masterpiece blends local myth with childhood trauma. Combining real documentary film with hysterical farce, this love/hate/goodbye note to Maddin’s hometown is narrated by the director with his characteristic cocktail of entertainment and inspired energy. Michael Burns commissioned the work with the command “enchant me with your treatment”, and this was Maddin’s cue to set about exploring the spell of his Winnipeg through a beguiling synthesis of animation, archive footage and re-enactments. The result is an extraordinary visual homage.
