what is everyone else contemplating about reading at the moment?
is it good? bad?
A Song of Stone by Iain Banks
and wasn't exactly impressed. assuming you've read some, what's his other stuff like?
lots of his later stuff is much more mature though. I'd recommend The Crow Road, which has a similar, dark sense of humour, but deals with family relationships and stuff in a much more mature, intelligent way.
then bought song of stone in a sort of 3 pack thing, along with canal dreams and espedair street. Canal dreams was really pretty rubbish :(
but i've heard espedair street is brilliant.
it was interesting and i enjoyed what i read but it wasn't very practical to carry about and read on the bus/at work.
reading at the moment
Orwell's Victory by Christopher Hitchens (in which he argues that Orwell was more right than anyone else in the last century, including himself)
Jeffrey Brown - Little Things
little things is awesome. i heart jeffrey brown.
i hope the fall in quality for the cover (i liked the lovely top shelf matt paper!) doesn't reflect the quality of the comics within
i'm not sure it's worth it
It is the best thing ever written in the whole history of ever (and I'm an English teacher and I've read a lot). Yes it certainly does take a while to get into but once you're in it sucks you in in a way that few other novels, films or anything ever manage. It doesn't just create its own world, it creates several of its own worlds all of which intersect and refute each other. God, it really really is good.
I never re-read books but I've re-read this book every year for the last 5 years.
who I borrowed it off wanted it back as he was moving.
It was really creepy and very clever. It did get a little confusing having to go back and forth reading the footnotes but I do aim to finsh it one day.
I am reading 'the collector' at the moment which is really good. I am aiming to read White Jazz next and finish off James Ellroy's LA Quartet.
it is still good.
